Boosting immune system

Today was DD's first day back at daycare after being out all summer and I had forgotten about all the runny noses and general crud that she seemed to have rather frequently.  I'm sure I'll be seeing all that again real soon...but it got me thinking about ways to prevent this as much as I can. Do you do anything to boost your LO's immune system (like certain vitamins, foods, etc.) if they are in daycare?

Re: Boosting immune system

  • Sophia is soo cute in your pic! Dd goes back to day care next week from bein off the summer also. I believe that when we went to visit her daycare so that i can get the list of items to get, she caught a cold. Already! I'm glad that you posted this question. Hopefully someone has a great answer. A co worker told me about giving dd cod liver oil every night. I'm going to do my research

  • How about probiotics? They are in yogurt but you can get supplements to put in applesauce or milk. My DS goes back next week and I think I'm going to start him on them now. They say that much of the immune system is in the intestines and the probiotics can help strengthen it. May see what your pedi says. Good luck and healthy vibes!
  • I think the best thing you can do is give your kid a healthy diet - dairy (probiotics aren't a bad idea so yogurt is great), fruits, veggies, protein, etc.  Make sure they take their vitamins and make sure you wash their hands as soon as you get home.  Otherwise, it's mostly just luck.
  • We have been giving our DD probiotics mixed in with her formula.  We also give her vitamin c drops and vitamin a.  Some of these things were recommended in  Dr. Sears's book.

  • Sucky as it may sound, you child's continued exposure to crud is the best way to challenge the immune system.

The first year of daycare is brutal, but after that it gets MUCH better! My DS#1 is so freakishly healthy (1 virus in 2+ years) that I joke about renting him out to the Pasteur Institute.

Oh--and he used to eat lots and lots of floor snacks.

  • This will be her 2nd year in daycare, so I'm hoping for less sick days, but we'll see.  Thanks for all the suggestions.
