2nd Set of Eyes

Since my regular RE was out today when I went in for CD3 u/s, my RE's partner filled in.

It was interesting to hear his take on things...he said normally when his patients are unexplained he will do less aggressive procedures first (natural IUIs, etc.) and if no success he routinely does a lap and if all clear he advises patients to go try on their own for a while if they're young enough before moving on to injectibles/IVF.  I just thought that was an interesting approach b/c most REs are all about trying consecutive treatments.  Not that one is necessarily better than the other, but I was just surprised to hear him say that.

Re: 2nd Set of Eyes

  • I don't know, I think that would be frustrating for me. If I've already been trying with no luck I don't want someone to look at me and say, "You're young, keep trying on your own." I get enough of that already. If I'm seeing an RE I want to be working towards something, not the same old stuff I've been trying without results.

  • i agree w/pp about that being kind of annoying.    by the time you get to an RE, you've "tried on your own" for plenty of time.    you're seeing the RE to be more aggressive b/c clearly sex at home hasn't done the trick (and probably won't).     it isn't for the RE to decide, IMO, what's "young enough" to keep trying on their own....   we wanted to be young parents.   clearly, that didn't go according to plan, but just because HE thinks I might be young, doesn't mean I think I'm young...    (i'm 28 and my RE tells me i'm young ALL THE TIME.   thankfully, he's still aggressive with us.   :-)

  • Frankly, comments like that come off as arrogant and insulting to me. It's no one else's business when I have children and those comments make it sound like I'm overreacting in the treatment I'm seeking.

  • Yeah, he's not my regular RE so I don't have to worry about it b/c mine is more aggressive...but it was just interesting to me to hear such a different approach.  Not that I'm following that method!

    This!

  • That is interesting! But I've read that even if you're unexplained, if you've been unsuccessful for a year your odds of naturally conceiving are 3%. It seems strange to send patients off to continue TTC on your own at that point!

Please tell me that's 3% per cycle - I think that's what the RE said...
