Assisted Hatching??

We have our big consultation and teach session today, but the doc office sent us the form for our procedure and has assisted hatching on the list of procedures.  This was the first I'd heard of this.  Is this common practice?  Anyone else had this done?

Re: Assisted Hatching??

  • I've had AH done for my last two fresh cycles. I think it's part of what helped me get my bfps. :)

  • I know that it is done with FETs often.  I didn't have it though.  But I've heard it helps.

  • Thanks for the feedback.  Congrats on your BFP!!!

I was just surprised when I saw AH on the procedure sheet.  I'm sure I will have a ton questions for the nurse today.

  • Same thing with me... my consent forms had assisted hatching on them and we hadn't talked about it. I went in on Friday for my teach session and asked about it and the nurse said that it is just a standard form, but they only do assisted hatching on people that need it for a specific reason. She said that it can potentially damage the eggs and they didn't do it often. So basically we will not have assisted hatching, even though our consent forms included it.

Its things like this that make me nervous about making the wrong decision.  This whole process is so overwhelming.

  • Yep, we had AH on this FET. We're not sure if it worked yet or not (beta this week), but I will definitely contribute a BFP to it.

  • as far as i know (and have researched and have spoken to my RE about), AH is a safe procedure and is more commonly being now than in the past.  they will do it if the egg's "shell" is deemed too thick.  my RE's office asks for our consent for AH as part of the IVF process in case it is deemed necessary on the day of ER.  if it isn't necessary, they won't do it.
  • Hi mamabear, I just wanted to wish you the best of luck with your IVF!  I know everything will turn our wonderful and your dream of becoming a mother is not far away.  Take care!

  • My RE indicated that this was usually for those AMA...being 38, I'm close, but he also is a minimalist believing in survival of the fittest.  DH and I declined.  We'll see how it goes!
