How old is the average child who is 65lbs.

Just trying to figure out if I want the Graco Nautalis booster with the 5pt harness or the Graco High back booster with no 5pt harness.  I really want her to have the 5 pt but wonder if she will let me still do it when she is 5 or six if still not 65 lbs.

Re: How old is the average child who is 65lbs.

  • I know that DH's cousin and neice are about that and they just turned 6.  However....  they are both chunky kids.  I think another cousin is 9 and about the same weight (tall & thin).

  • I would definitely go with the five point for safety.  DS is 4.5 and only weighs 32 pounds.  It will be forever until he hits 65.  He'll just have to live with a 5 point harness for as long as we can use it whether he likes it or not.

  • I think around 7 is average. I plan on keeping my kids in a 5 pt harness until they are too tall/heavy, whichever comes first. No offense, but my child has no say as to whether or not they will "let me" buckle them in a 5 pt harness.
  • Mine has no say either but eventually she will figure out how to undo the 5 pt and if I am driving and she undoes this then it becomes unsafe.
  • It depends on the kid but Natalie will be 6 in a few weeks and she is tall for her age and nowhere near 65lb. I totally let her have a say about the seat because she does so many playdates where she either brings her seat or uses a booster in her friends car. And I guess it sounds bad but she would be mortified to be going into first grade the only one left in a 5 point harness. But if I felt she were truly unsafe in the booster I would not have agreed...she is boosted up and the seat belt fits properly over her so I felt comfortable moving her. And it seems the other parents feel the same because not one of her classmates remains in a 5pt harness.
  • DS is tall and skinny, he weights 65 lbs, he is 9 1/2.
  • My 7 year old is 47 lbs.
  • I would definitely get the Nautilus to keep her in a 5 point harness for now.  Then you'll still have the option to convert it to a booster with the seat belt when you feel she's ready.  Many kids will outgrow the harness by height before they do in weight, so I wouldn't necessarily worry about when she reaches 65 pounds.

  • lsufan- good point!  Thats why I am looking into new seats now..she is almost at the height limit on her seat now.  I think I am leaning more toward the Nautilus anyway but wasn't sure.

  • From what I have heard the "booster seat peer pressure" starts in kindergarten.  LMAO thinking about booster seat peer pressure.

That said when my cousin was 6 no way did she stay still enough in the car to keep the shoulder belt safely positioned.

  • 65lbs is 50%tile at just over 9yr for girls according to the growth chart; it's 95%tile for a 6.5yo.

  • Um, lets see- considering my almost 5yo DD only weighs 31 lbs, I figure at least middle school for us LOL!
  • My 8.5 y/o is about 60 pounds and really tall (4'9").
    .
  • Noah is 9 and is 64-65lbs. I think he's average.
  • LOL, I was pretty off on the average weight for age. My kids are super teeny so I have a hard time with what is "average" without looking at a chart.
