Pregnant after 35

Anyone measuring behind in ultrasound yet caught up-also vanishing twin?

Here's the situation:  Had my 1st ultrasound Thursday.  Tech saw 2 sacs, 1 was empty measuring in the 4 week range and the other was in the 5 week range but no heartbeat yet (I was 6 weeks 3 days).  I assumed it was definitely a miscarriage for both, but my OB said that with 2 sacs, the measurements can be behind and actually catch up.  She also said the empty sac can begin to grow still.  Had bloodwork done and my number doubled to 16,503 (should be between 14,760 and 29,520) so the nurse said my numbers were okay-however, she did mention the empty sac still produceds HCG.  Last bloodwork was exactly a week ago at 1,845.  I have not experienced any bleeding, but have very mild cramping from time to time (not sure if it is cramping or just my stomach driving me crazy from all the news).  I am also still taking my BBT and my temps are still remaining high.  I am trying to stay positive for my ultrasound on Monday, but know there is a possibility of miscarrying both the baby and empty sac.  Just curious if anyone has had such an experience.  FYI- I had a successful pregnancy 2 years ago with my son, but had a chemical pregnancy 2 months before this BFP.

  • Hi there-

I have absolutely no experience in this area but wanted to wish you good luck. I hope everything goes well on Monday. My thoughts are with you!

  • I can't really say I've been through a situation exactly like this. But I did have a vanishing twin that stopped growing at 6 weeks. I never bled or anything but the empty egg sac does create complications when it comes to blood work, ect.. For example, when I went in for genetic testing all my numbers were messed up because the sac was still in there. I would say that as long as you aren't bleeding there is hope. Good luck when you go in and definitely keep us posted.
  • no experience but want to say i'm thinking good thoughts for you.
  • no experience either but wanted to wish you the best of luck :)

  • I do know that this early in the stage the babies can measure +/- a week and still be w/in normal range.  I too had a twin pregnancy at the beginning of this one but Baby B (who was much smaller than A and whose HB was much lower) stopped growing at 6w4d.  What type of u/s did you have (internal?) cuz w/both my pregnancies they found HBs at 5wks.

  • Try to stay positive, sounds like the full story has not unfolded!  I don't have experience, but I came in because I wanted to see what others had to say.  I think my 1st u/s might be a little early due to the fact that my LMP was early and ovulation may have occured later than expected (also b/c we were using rhythm method which worked fine until the period got all wacky).  Good luck!
  • I hope everything went okay today!

My first ultrasound (around 6 weeks) they found "nothing viable."  I was a mess, but  they tracked my hcg levels anyway and I had another ultrasound in a week.  Everything was fine then, and the week after they found a heartbeat!  I hope you get good news!

  • I'm late responding, but just wanted to add some positive thoughts... My first u/s was at what I thought should have been 6wk3d but I measured 5wk3d and they could not find a hb. At my next appt a week later they found the hb and said I must have just been off on my dates. At each of the following appts I measured a day or two ahead. As of my last appt. on Wed. I'm now measuring a week ahead and am exactly (to the day) where I thought I should have been at my first appt!

Good luck and I hope everything works out well for you!
