Constipation and Bleeding...

Hi! I haven't introduced myself yet but I found out I am pregnant on Tuesday.... so let's start with an overshare Huh? I have been really constipated and have very tough stools recently.  I had a little blood when I wiped a couple days ago (rectal not vaginal) but nothing much.  I read about hemarroids and figured that it was ok.  I just went to the bathroom, I didn't strain much at all, still tough stools, but there was lots of bright red blood drops in toilet and bright red when I wiped!  I am kinda freaked but doc is closed and can't ask.... should I try a stool softener or is something really wrong?

Re: Constipation and Bleeding...

  • Sounds like a typical hemarrhoid to me! I used to get them a lot when I was younger. It will get worse before it gets better (which is why there is more blood). Stool softeners will help but they can take 12-36 hours so READ THE LABELS!

To ease discomfort, sit in a bathtub of warm water for about 10 minutes (or as long as you can stand it) and repeat as often as necessary! Good luck!

Oh, and welcome and congrats on your PG! :)

  • I was told by my dr that bright red is bleeding from a tear in the rectum itself. If it was something internal the blood would be black...well really dark in color. Not bright red. Hope I could help..but def yes, a softener should help.

Ditto this. ?Drink plenty of water and increase your fiber intake: prunes, spinach, figs, etc. ?It will all help make stools softer. ?And definitely sit in the bath for 10 minutes or longer to soak it. ?You can get a sitz bath at the drugstore, even medicated wipes and cream. ?You'll need it after you deliver too. ?:)?

  • Ok thanks so much for the advice!  Every little thing freaks me out lol DH is off to get stool softeners as we speak and I am going to attempt to drink some prune juice.... it is digusting to me lol Thanks so much Smile

  • Colace (docusate sodium) is a frickin MIRACLE WORKER
  • It could also just be an anal fissure (which is just a small cut in your anal area caused by the hard stool).  I had horrible constipation with my son and got a number of anal fissures.  I should see blood when I wiped and sometimes a few drops in the toilet.  Try and increase your liquid intake and take a stool softener.  Once my OB recommended a stool softener and I took them, it helped a lot and I never got another fissure.

  • Drink more water, and eat more fiber - it will help with constipation.

I had a little spotting after going to the bathroom today - scared the crap out of me, so to speak... but they say occasional spotting is normal, only need to be concerned about severe cramping and heavy bleeding.

  • Colace will really help. With my last pregnancy, my doctor prescribed me prenatals with colace in them.
