DH losing job

DH was just called into HR yesterday and told he is being downsized.  He is a public school employee, but is non-union and a one-man department.  They are going to absorb his duties into someone else's position and he is out.  Fortunately (I guess) they are letting him stay for an estimated 2 months (although I guess they could change their minds at any time).

He is a wreck, and we are both just reeling.  We have savings so we'll be OK if he doesn't find a job right away.  We were prepared to live on one income, but we assumed that MY job was the one that was most at risk.  He makes more and carries our health insurance--we never dreamed he would be let go.  Just goes to show that you can take absolutely nothing for  granted.

  • My DH has been laid off for 6 months. I know in the begining the feeling of devistation. We were prepared either, and DH made 2x as much as I did. I went back to work FT (I was working PT) and we pulled DD out of day-care. He also filed for unemployment, which thanks to the federal stimulus package he gets 52 weeks of benefits. We also switched all 3 of us to my companies health insurance plan with no problem. So we have been managing. Although it may be overwhelming, in time, you will manage and things will be OK. There are a lot of people out there in your same situation that can offer support. Good luck.
  • Oh geez - sorry to hear such awful news!  I pray he finds something as a sufficient replacement.
  • I'm really sorry to hear that.  My DH was laid off too and once the panic subsided, it really has been a blessing to have him home with DD and her not getting sick as often since she isn't currently in daycare.  It's stressful and a big adjustment, but it will be okay.  Someone told me "you'll be fine as long as you work together and don't turn against each other.  And that's been very true.  Hopefully your DH will find a job right away!
  • I'm so sorry! I hope he finds something else in these next two months. What kind of position does he have?
  • We're in the same boat, DH was given one weeks notice on Wed. He makes 60% of our income and we never saw this coming since he works for such a strong company. My company has been restructuring so I was/am worried about my job as well.

  • I'm sorry to hear this.  DH was laid off a few years ago and it was stressful.  As the pp said, stick together and you can get through anything.

  • H was laid off in May and like the PP said, once the panic subsides it has been nice to have someone at home.  It takes the pressure off of 'what if they get sick, etc.'  He should apply for unemployment as soon as he is laid off as it can take 2 weeks to start and he will be paid weekly about half of what his usual salary is.   I hope he finds something soon.  My H is still looking!
