Anyone start DC when child was 2 years old?

I have 1 year old twins.  We have had a live-in nanny this past year and are in the process of hiring another one now for the next year.  Daycare just wasn't an option for many reasons last year and this year.  However, for next fall, when my DDs turn 2, we are seriosuly considering putting them in F/T daycare.  We are totally fine with this situation and will just have to tweak our schedules for dropp off/pick up.  I am just curious as to the adjustment of 2 year olds starting daycare.  I know with any new environmethere is an adjustment period.   I am just curious as to whether anyone here started their DC at 2 years old and their experience(s).  TIA!

  • I don't have any experience with it because my son started at 4 months but there have been several kids starting in his current class 18 - 27 months and I noticed that every one of them cried every day for the first week and after that, seemed just as happy as the rest of the kids.

  • My sons are 20 months and just started this past Monday (3 days a week) for the first time and so far it's going fine.  They've slept two hours each day, eaten their lunch and according to their teachers are enjoying the other kids.  However, my problem is during dropoff.  The cling to me crying and Wednesday was the worst!  However, they usually stop crying after a few minutes and go wtih the flow.  Another thing we're dealing with is a cold.  It started after the second day and I think we'll be dealing that all year. :(
  • DS1 went into DC full time when he was 3 1/2 after being home with me all day. He freaking loved it! Finally able to play with other kids his age instead of cleaning with Mom..

  • Yes...my boys started in June when they were 26 months.  They go only 3 days per week.  The first 2 weeks they cried hard every day when I dropped them off...but I would peek in the window and within a few minutes they were fine.  They also would cry when I picked them up too...I guess they remembered I left...but were fine once we got in the car.  Things are much better now, but they still occasionally cry a little when I drop off.  But I know they love it because they always talk about their teachers, the other kids, what they do, etc. and seem really happy about "school" as we call it.  The biggest drawback has been that they have been sick A LOT this summer, and were never sick before we started.  I am hoping that they build up some immunity soon!

    Good Luck!

  • We did... she was in two different small in-home situations (one had 2 other kids, the other was just DD) until just before her second birthday, when we transitioned her into preschool.

The adjustment wasn't bad at all. We had one week (oddly, it was the third week) with some crying at drop-off, but she always settled in. Now, she throws a tantrum when we come to pick her up!

She really loves it and I'm glad we made the move when we did.

I have a bunch of blog posts about how we chose the preschool, how the transition went, etc. https://worklifeunbalanced.blogspot.com
