Baby Names

Name books?

I am buying a book today to take on our long car trip this weekend to work on a name for our little girl. Any recomendations?

We do have a middle name picked out already, so if you have suggestions to go with it that would be helpful too. Middle name will be Marlena. My mom is Marleen and Dh mom is Maria-Elena

  • I borrowed 100,000+Baby Names by Bruce Lansky from a friend. It's pretty good.

I recommend this one, too. I bought it and returned it after looking through it. I'm just that cheap.?

  • I <3 Marlena!  And I love the fact that it's a combo! Great! (sorry no suggestion for a book!)
  • I love The Baby Name Wizard. It's different form other name books - each entry has what they call "sibling suggestions" - 5 names for each sex that you might like as well. I find that featre really helpful. Also they have an awesome website - thebabynamewizard.com

  • I have Bruce Lansky's book too-but honestly, he totally padded it to get 1000,000 names! Some of them are horrible and clearly made up (think random apostrophes). lol.

That being said, I like the first part of the book where he categorizes names- names that are one syllable, 2, 3, or 4, names that end in 'a', Bblical names, old fashioned names back in style, etc. The lists were helpful and fun.

Great book!  It tells you why names are gaining in popularity - like the social, economic, cultural issues that are influencing a trend.  It's not only a list of names, it's also an interesting read!

This book is great; just make sure it's the NEW version. The covers are essentially identical, but the new one was just printed in July. Example, Target had the old version, but the book store had the new one.

I also think the book Beyond Ava and Aiden is decent, but not as good as BNW, which includes a lot of info you can't get on the BNW site.
