I don't give my 3 yo popcorn because of the risk of choking. But, the other day we were at our local park with friends. The mom, whom I know well, gave her boys (ages 3 & 5) a bag of popcorn & let them run around with it, eating it on the various slides, tunnels, etc. DS was playing with them & wanted the popcorn too. I let him have it and watched him like a hawk. I didn't want to come off as condescending to question my friend's decision to let her boys have popcorn. But it really, really made me nervous -- especially when they are hinding in a tunnel, who knows how long a kid could be choking in there before one of us realized it. Of course I was right there watching DS even in the tunnel, but the other mom didn't seem concerned about it at all.
So, what would you have done? Would you tell the other mom why you don't give your child popcorn? Would you have let your DC eat the popcorn or found an excuse to say no?
Re: s/o to no popcorn, WWYD?
LOL TOTALLY THIS!!! If god forbid something happens, being the "not cool mom" will be the least of your worries! I would have just offered an alternative snack...
Ditto Punk.
Jack is allowed to eat popcorn sitting on the couch once in a while. Usually if we are watching a movie or something. I don't feed Jack snacks at the playground and if I do we take a break and eat. You know those kids were dropping popcorn all over the playground.
LOL! Leave it to punk to be so blunt
Hailey is allowed to have popcorn but only while sitting and I pick out the pieces for her so that I know they are fully popped and not hard.
that actually isn't the choking hazard. (well its part of it). the other part is that is is light and easily inhaled quickily. so the light fluffy popped parts are just as equally a hazard.
Interesting! I guess I never thought of that. I'm still gonna stick to my plan of letting her have it as long as she's sitting and I can watch her like a hawk. But, in this case, maybe the fully popped pieces are the worst.
It's a wonder I haven't killed my kid yet!
I'm going to be honest here. I have been paranoid about giving DS popcorn so far. He's only tasted it once. Two days ago (before the other thread), I might have done the same thing you did, though. I might have let him have some since his playmates were having some, but I would have made him stop and eat it. DS can't play on the playground while eating anything. I'm afraid of him choking any anything while playing, not just popcorn. Plus,...ewww, dirty playground = dirty hands = dirt in the popcorn = eating dirt. lol. Yucky.
That being said...now that I have heard these popcorn horror stories from the other thread...I would handle it differently knowing what I know now. I would say that DS can't have popcorn yet b/c of the choking risk and offer him an alternative snack. But, he STILL has to stop playing to eat it! Ha ha. That's my rule!
I was the one who posted about it yesterday because my ds started eating popcorn and loved it. But after reading horror stories, there will be no more popcorn until he's 21!! I know anything could be a choking hazard but it just seems like popcorn is unnecessary. I mean, it's not like it's healthy!
I would just say that you've heard about kids choking on popcorn and for that reason you decided that for your own child popcorn is on the do not eat list. Say you appreciate the willingness to share but you prefer your ds not eat it.
I would want to say what punk said. I love it!! But I'd be diplomatic so they don't start shoving popcorn down his throat when you're not looking to get back at you!!
