s/o Poll: How many Proms did you go to?

My daughter (who is going into 11th grade this school year) has advised me she's not going to any and that they are stupid.  I went to three (my junior and senior proms) and in 10th grade, I was dating a guy in 11th grade and went to his.

ETA: I hit the post button too soon.  I said that about my daughter because I think she's making a mistake and hope she changes her mind.  Anyone not go to prom/the prom and regret it?

  • I went to three also. Same situation: my junior and senior proms and as a date to someone else's prom.

  • I went to two, I think. I wore a tuxedo and heels to one and an ugly a$$ green dress to the other.

  • I just went to 2, junior and senior year.  They were kind of lame.

  • 2: my Junior and Senior. Junior sucked. The guy I was dating at the time was a complete toolbox. I went with my best guy friend to my Senior and had a blast (toolbox couldn't get out of work).

Damn, why did I stay with that moron for so long? Blech!

  • We had Junior Prom here.  I went all 4 years.  My fresh and soph years I was dating a junior.  Senior year it's tradition to just go stag with a bunch of your girlfriends.

I feel bad for my parents now.  I know my dresses were not cheap.  And then to have to buy 4 of them.  But the never said a word to me about the cost.

EDIT:  Just saw your edit question, I loved going!  I loved to get dressed up, have my hair done, going out to dinner with good friends.  My Junior year I was very involved with it.  I was on Prom Court and was also part of the decoration committee.

  • I went to three. My freshman year I went with a date, and my sophomore and junior years I went with just friends. I was supposed to go with a date my junior year, but he ended up having to do community service. Oh, memories... Haha.
  • Just one, I was a junior, my bf was a senior.  I graduated early, so I was in college by the time my senior prom came around.

I bought all of mine. My parents weren't about to foot the bill and the ones junior and senior year were about $150 each.

  • I didn't go to prom and have never regretted it.  I just didn't get into that scene, and neither did most of my high school friends.

Instead I went to a prom-like dance my freshman year in college with my first real love, and have fond memories.

LOL young stupid love. He was at the STRIP CLUB while I was at the prom. No joke. He picked me up from the dance and went back there to pick up his buddy and left me in the truck for half an hour. We were together for 3 more years....

I just saw this.  I think she's going to regret not going.  If think if she and her girlfriends go together as a group, they'll have a blast.  I know prom can be kinda lame (to some people), but it's part of high school, IMO.  I hope she changes her mind and has fun with it!

Even thought I don't talk to any of my prom dates anymore, I wouldn't trade going to prom for anything!

  • 2. My senior prom and then DH's prom... he was a year below me but we knew each other but didnt date until I was in college.

I mostly agree with you and think that I would regret not going to my proms. The first one I went with a group a friends and had a blast. Maybe your daughter doesnt have a group of dateless friends to go with like I did though. Without them it probably would have been awful. And if she doesnt have a date either it might not be fun.

  • Embarrassed5.

Dated a junior my freshman year, dated a senior my sophomore year, went both junior and senior year, and was a date for one more.

I had fun at most of them, but it really is just a dance.  I don't know that I'd look back and have regrets if I hadn't gone.

  • I went to two--as a date when I was a sophomore and then my senior prom.  I skipped my junior prom.  We also had two semi-formal Christmas dances and I went to both of those.

sean's--make Jordan watch "Pretty in Pink" before she makes a final decision.

  • I went to four. I went with my guy friends ( I was a major tomboy back in the day).
  • I went to none. I really don't regret it.

?Now, the military balls I went to in college with my now-DH? Those were cool.

  • 2 proms, 3 christmas formals (basically the same as prom). I went to too many.. I had about 10 dresses in my closet. I do think your daughter should go. I didn't go to my college graduation and I regret it. I too thought it would be dumb, but I wish I had.
  • 2 - junior and senior years.  I went to my senior year one with DH.

  • I went to 2, my junior and senior proms. I was very much into my junior prom because I was on the planning committee and very into the guy I was dating at the time, had a so-so time at my senior prom because of other things going on with friends at that time that interfered with my enjoyment of it. That aside, I don't think proms today are as simplistic as they were back when I was in high school. There is so much time and money spent on them, and the social pressure to do so, that it's almost like a wedding. I wouldn't be surprised if this is one of your daughter's reasons for not going.
  • Okay, so like I said I graduated early and therefore missed Prom, Senior Spring Break, and just a lot of final semester of HS stuff.  Looking back, I absolutely regret it.   What was my rush?  I know it's not the same situation, but I think she should go.
  • I went to junior's cause alot of my friends were seniors and I went to seniors

  • blech - prom. I went with a friend's friend just to go. My boyfriend and I had broken up just prior to so that put a shadow on the entire event. We ended up leaving early and partied at a rave. I was a bad kid.

  • 4 proms.

1st: My then-boyfriend's junior prom during my freshman year.

2nd: My junior prom - went with a friend (boy)

3rd: My senior prom - went with my BFF (boy)

4th: Went to another friend's senior prom as his date.

  • Three proms for me.
  • I went to my senior prom.  Eh, the few people I know who didn't go to prom (that mentioned it, I mean, how often do you really talk about this?) don't seem to regret it at all.
