Runny nose

I am usually a lurker on the pregnancy boards but today I have a question about my 3 year old.  He has had a runny nose for the last few days and is coughing up phlegm also.  He has not had a fever or any other symptom.  I am assuming the cough is just a result of drainage.  He has not been congested or stuffed up, just runny.  I know we are not supposed to give them most cold medicines, I was just wondering if there is anything I can give him to dry him up a little.  I was thinking Benadryl, but it just makes him so tired.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Re: Runny nose

  • Do you think it could poddibly be allergies? I would try zyrtac kids if you think that's the case. It's dries up my little guy very nicely

  • I'm not a moron, promise. I meant possibly lol
  • Thanks!  That is a good idea, I will pick up some Zyrtec today and give it a try!  I have been thinking it could be allergies...
  • I would also suspect allergies.  My kids both have seasonal allergies (mostly spring) but your son could be dealing with ragweed at this time of year.  My pedi says pollen allergies usually surface in the 4th summer of the child's life.

Try children's Claritin.  It takes about 48 hours for this medication to build up in the kid's system, so don't look for short term relief from it.  However, it has NO side effects at all. I usually give it to my kids daily for a week or 10 days, then stop for 2 days, to see if the pollen has subsided.
