Metformin and Alli

I haven't had my prescription filled for Metformin yet, but will tomorrow, but I'm wondering if it would/could interact with Alli.  I don't take Alli but was considering it before I got the prescription for Met. I guess first would be is it safe and second would be how well it might work.  Oh, and I'd ask my dr, but she took 4 weeks to get back to me with test results so Lord knows how long it would take her to respond.  I have changed my diet and am exercising every day, but I was thinking if I still wasn't losing weight in a month or two I might try Alli too.  Whaddaaya think?

Re: Metformin and Alli

  • From what I have heard about Alli and Metformin separately (they make you regret eating ANYTHING even slightly containing oils/fat), I would probably not combine them.

I don't have any advice from a medical standpoint, but the sheer embarassment my friends have experienced from each one individually is enough for me to not do it ever.

  • Medically, they don't interact with one another but, I'm pretty sure you'll have some wicked GI side effects with the combo given the havoc they  cause in the instestines by themselves.
  • Honestly, I think Met really gives me the benefits that people promote of Alli and the same side effects as well.  From what I know (and I have never taken Alli) it gives you some major GI problems if you eat fatty foods.  Well that is what Met does for me anyway.  I would say def check with your Dr before taking Alli and honestly, I would just wait and start Met first to see how you react.  The only time I ate anything fatty (and I am on the low carb diet) I was sick all night long.  HTH

  • Eek, I didn't know Met did that!  I'm still researching it.  I guess I won't try the combo, that would be pretty darn embarassing, I'm laughing at the thought because I could just see it happening when we get slammed at work.

I think everyone has different s/e but I know for me I have had no appetite since being on it and have had some GI problems, especially when increasing the dosage.  I mainly have to force myself to eat when I take my pills and I don't eat other than that, so it has helped with my weight loss.  GL and hopefully you won't have too many s/e!

  • I agree w/ the previous posters, I know nothing about Alli (except for what I've read) but I think you'd be absolutely miserable on both. Met makes me so, so sick. I've never, EVER had a problem swallowing pills in my life...even as a child I wanted pills over chewables, shots, liquids..I didn't even need anything to drink to swallow pills. But those Met pills, yikes..it takes me about 20 minutes to take the 3 of them and I gag the whole time. It sucks.

  • I've been a long time lurker of this board and never posted, but I do have some Alli experience that might help. I was on Alli for almost 3 months while we were ttc earlier this year. I had good results, but the s/e listed on the bottle WILL happen. I've never been one to worry about s/e, but with Alli it's WHEN not IF. Not to discourage you though. I had great results and it was an encouragement to eat right. Personally, I don't recommend mixing the meds while ttc. While on Allie I got a BFP and m/c at 6 wks. Don't know for sure if one had anything to do with the other, but I'm sticking with doc prescriptions only from now on. GL!
