Baby Names

Clicky poll: Which do you prefer?

DH and I are engaged in a boy name discussion. Both names have significance, but we're trying to decide which one sounds better.

I'm sure many of you will dislike both of these, but I'm more interested in which one is better. So, if you dislike these, leave those comments at the door. Think of it as which is the best of the worst, if you want.

Finley is unisex. And we would possibly use Fin(n) as a nn. At least a casual nn, anyway. Fish for Fisher as well. See the commonality? :-)?

  • An odd answer, but here goes!

I like Fisher better as a "whole" name, and I like Finley better because of its nicknaming possibilities - Finn sounds better than Fish!

I've heard Finley as a girl's name (maybe a different spelling), so that might be something to consider.

  • It's hilarious you're getting "Finley is a girl's name" comments- I posted awhile back about Finley for a girl and 90% of the responses were "no, Finley is a boy's name!"

    Anyway.

I prefer Fisher because I DO think Finley is being used more for girls lately and I'd hate for my son to have a name that ANY girl in his school might have. ??

  • I really like Finley. I don't think it's a girl's name at all!

  • I went with finley especially after you said you'd call the kid Fish!
  • Any name can 'go girl'.  For example, my neighbor has two daughters named Peyton and Anderson.  I notice that the poster above who worries about girls with her son's name has a son named Anderson.  Now, I think that Anderson is completely masculine - I think of Anderson Cooper surrounded by bombs! - so I don't think there's a risk of it sounding girly.

It just goes to show that with the trend toward gender bending names, you never know.

I like Finley better because the inevitable Fish is a horrible nickname.

  • Haha, yeah... I don't plan on calling him Fish all the time (like when someone calls someone named Alex "Al" to get their attention). But yeah, that is DH's pick. I don't mind it all that much, but he won't get off his platform with it (and I won't get off mine for Finley, I suppose).?

And to anyone who is wondering, if we end up having two boys in the future, we will not be using both of these names. It's a one or the other kind of deal.?
