Rec'd a bill from old daycare..WWYD?

I've been posting for 2 months now about how much DD's old daycare sucks.  There were numerous billing mistakes, safety issues, the fact that my 2-3 month old baby sat in a swing in the toddler room all day, DD coming home in a different brand of diaper every day, wearing clothes that weren't hers, etc... Too many to count now.

Anyway, we pulled her out a few weeks ago.  Long story very short, the director doesn't know how to keep her books and was always coming at us with random "you owe $25 for that" or "you owe $50 for this" every day it was a different amount, with no rhyme or reason, which we didn't owe.  So at the beginning of this month, I paid her the exact balance that we owed, which was $200 even.

Today I get a bill in the mail for $70, with a note saying "must be paid in full by 9/25 to avoid a $25 late fee". Then they attached a copy of the pages we signed when we enrolled.  It does say that they require a 2 week notice before withdrawing, which we did not give.  There's an itemized bill but it doesn't make any sense, and doesn't even list our payments correctly that we paid. I don't even understand where the $70 amount is coming from.

Should I:

A. Just suck it up and pay them (even though I know that we don't owe them, and I don't want to pay them when I already paid the full amount we owed).

B. Write her a letter and nicely tell them to fvck off and we aren't paying anymore, as we already paid in full?  What's the worst they can do, take us to court over $70?

C. Other..please explain!

WWYD?

PS. It's not the money issue, it's, why should I be penalized when she can't keep her books straight?

  • I'd go with B!  Write them a letter, list out your last few payments, and tell them you don't feel as though you owe anymore.  If they come back at you again, I might go with A just to avoid the hassle, but I think you should at least push back at them.

  • If you don't owe it, don't pay it. She needs to learn how to run a business and keep track of her books

  • I'd take the bill directly to the director and talk about it with her face to face. Once things get settled I'd ask her to sign a piece of paper stating nothing more is owed.
  • I'd call and try to find out what the charges are, at least, and make sure that's everything.  Getting her to sign something or at least enclosing a note with your check saying "as per our conversation of x date, this payment is our final payment at your center" or something like that would be good.

This.  If you didn't give a 2 week notice then you might actually owe them something but I would make sure you understand what that is and have signed confirmation that you are paid in full.

  • I typed a long letter and basically said "I don't owe anything, I'm not paying anything...Thanks"
