I just try to take heart in the fact that I'm young, I'm doing my best, and it'll only go up hopefully. And that I have many years to go to build it up.
It's not luck - it's responsible retirement planning...
I took a big hit last year too. It is depressing but we do have many years until retirement to recover!
Yeah, I'm glad to have retirerment savings, but it is real money and losing $40k isn't free. I agree-- good to be young and have long enough to let the market recover.
My husband has money in retirement and $$$ in 401k - I have a little but we managed to never to touch it while he was out of work for over a year! I was also out of work for over a year! Talk about responsible. We also hold no credit card debt and have at least 6 months in savings to cover our mtg.
What I am saying is that to have that much money saved at your age and a job in this economy is lucky. Plus you are a female engineer .... guaranteed job stablity- consider it luck. I have a M.S. in Human Resources - I should know:)
Re: groan-- just checked my 401k from 2008
I'm just never going to retire was my conclusion.
