does your dc say "full" words??

ds is cutting the words in pieces.. instead of saying "desayuno" (that means breakfast in spanish) he says "uno" and isntead of  "zapato" (that means shoe) he says "papo" he does it also with small spanish words like "uva" (grape) he says "va" and he is doing that even with words in english like banana he'll say "nana" and other words he does the same.. is this normal? he does say a lot of words though but just parts of them.. luckily we understand!!

Re: does your dc say "full" words??

  • This is very common with toddlers.  My son had a severe tongue tie and so we have been working with a speech therapist monitoring his speech.  The dropping of the ends of words is very common at that age.  Her suggestion is to repeat back what he is saying using the correct full pronunciation.  For example, if he asks for a 'nana' for breakfast, say back to him: "you would like a banana?".

  • Some words she'd shorten -- 'nana for banana, for example.

But that time has passed.  Full words now...  (and sentences. ;)   Although for kicks there is one phrase she pronounces wrong because it always gets a laugh:   'excuse me' is 'ex-mimi'  or just 'smimi'.  lol

  • It depends on the word.  For zapato, she says "pato."  A lot of words she'll say completely though.  Off hand, lollipop comes to mind.  Her "L" kind of sounds like a "W" but she has all of the syllables in there.

  • very normal, i wouldn't worry about it, one morning you will wake up and he will be putting together 3-4 word sentences and you will say "what?"Hmm
  • Aiden has recently been saying full words, a few weeks ago he would say "ock" instead of rock, now he says "rock" and things like that... it will come and like all PPs said, it is normal...

  • Yes, MY DS does this also. Banana is a really popular one, my DS calls it a nani... i wouldnt worry about it, just say it back to him the correct way.
  • For the most part, she says the full word in a full sentence.
