2nd Trimester

I think I'm getting a UTI

Ugh, I haven't had one in like 12 years.

I have the feeling of a lot of pressure on my bladder and earlier today, when I peed, it was only a tiny amount (happened several times).

If you have had a UTI while pregnant, what did it feel like when it started?

Re: I think I'm getting a UTI

  • I had one while pregnant with dd and honestly had no idea. I had pressure in my lower abdomen, like a heavy type feeling, and that was it. I wouldn't of known if the pee test they gave me hadn't told me.

  • It can be really hard to tell the difference between a UTI while pg and just the pressure you feel on your bladder from the baby.  As your pg progresses, it is common to have the urge to pee, and then not be able to go very much at all.  And then feel like you have to go again 10 minutes later.  So it is very similar to a UTI.

If you are concerned, you should call your dr, because UTI during pg can be pretty serious.  My OB does a routine "clean catch" urinalysis at least once during mid-pg, just to monitor, b/c you may not even be aware as the symptoms mimick pg.

If you have pain when urinating, especially at the end, that can be a red flag.  Or if you experience low back pain in combination with your other symptoms, as that can indicate kidney involvement.

  • im on my 4th round in two months. it felt just like that...you dont have to have any pain or burning when you first get one. id say call the doc if it doesnt go away and get some antibiotics called in! my problem is that i dont know the difference between what is part of being pregnant and what is a UTI. i have a friend who said she always felt like she had to pee when she was pregnant but never had a UTI, so who knows. im on my last day of antibiotics and im still feeling exactly what you are, so i hope my body isnt becoming resistant to the meds and that its just baby! i have no other symptoms but the pressure.
  • I went through a phase a few years back of getting them all the  time.

When I was newly pregnant it felt like I was getting a UTI. It felt the same as any other time.

What I've learnt is that if you drink lots of water and some cranberry juice that you can battle them off.

I did that early on in the pregnancy, I wasn't drinking enough because it made me feel sick to begin with so I had to push through that.

Since then I've kept my water intake high. Drank cranberry juice daily and made sure I go to the toilet as soon as I feel the need. Sometimes hanging on means that the urine is sitting around breeding bacteria.

    Good luck.

  • I was just diagnosed with one yesterday.  I felt like I had to go to the bathroom but when I went, only a little came out.  I didn't have any burning or anything like that.  I didn't think anything of it, just thought maybe it was the baby pressing against my bladder.  I've never been pregnant before so how would i know?  I've only had 1 UTI in my life (about 9 years ago) and it progressed into a kidney infection within a day or 2.  I was really worried that was going to happen this time so I called my doctor immediately.  They had me do a urinalysis and got back to me right away to confirm the bacteria in my urine.  I'm now on antibiotics (3 times a day) for a week!  I was glad I caught it early becuase who knows what would have happened.  If you think you have one, I would call the doc and see what they have to say. GL!
