22 month old not putting words together?

Anyone else have a child that is not talking in sentences yet?

Re: 22 month old not putting words together?

  • I don't have kids but I nanny for a three year old and 21 month old twins so I like to check the board out.

Neither of the twins are anywhere near saying sentences.  They barely get words out and only have a few really coherent ones.  Their pediatrician is not worried because they are really communicative in other ways - just not in talking yet.  He said that speech can be delayed in twins because they communicate well with each other.

If you continue to be concerned I would just check in with the pediatrician to double check :)

  • My 22 mo olds are not speaking in sentences. Not even close really. I don't know if they are a little behind due to being preemies, or twins, or what. I have been working with them a lot, and just enrolled my DS in EI for speech. Hopefully they will have a burst of words pretty soon. That is what I have been hearing will happen, so I am crossing my fingers for that.

  • Yup. Neither of my boys is putting words together yet.  They were preemies, and they've been getting speech therapy for about 3 months. They say very few words, so it's going to be awhile before they have enough to actually string 2 together.

I'm really not worried about them though. Their comprehension is amazing - they're just taking their sweet time forming words with their sweet little mouths.

  • Mine don't really. Katie will say "I do it" or "I did it" and they might say Hi Dada but that's it as far as putting words together.  I don't think it's even expected until after the age of 2.  I'm not at all concerned.
  • mine are a little younger, but they're not even putting two words together, so i really don't think they'll be saying sentences in six weeks. :P

  • My CW has a daughter who is 25 months and not saying any words at all.  She recognizes words (if he asks her to touch her eyelid or shin, she does) but she doesn't talk yet.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • I'm goinig to say this as nice as possible.....you are being overly anal about things.  Children at 24 months are supposed to say about 50 words.  You obsess over things that your children SHOULDN'T be doing.

Honestly, if all I had to worry about was my 2 year old NOT putting words together I'd be thrilled!  My little one who will be 2 soon has about 3-5 words that he uses.

  • My FS is 25 months and is still not talking in sentences yet. In fact, he only really started trying to talk in the last month. He was evaluated for Early Intervention and did not qualify for services. Your little ones may not talk in sentences for many more months and that is completely fine. Don't worry - enjoy the silence while you have it!
  • thanks for your input but don't answer my posts if you can't be somewhat nice. you always answer my posts with nasty answers. thanks but no thanks
  • Actually, she was pretty nice, she's trying to help you realize that you are worrying for nothing.
