TTC after 35

Onto a fertility specialist....

I went to see my OBGYN today about going onto my second month of Clomid and after talking with her, she refered me to an infertility specialist.  I don't know to cry or be excited at this point.   I know I'm ovulating and my periods are like clockwork-I was one day late this first round of Clomid.

What can I expect on that first visit to the fertility specialist?  Thanks ladies.  : )

Oh, and is there a difference between an RE and a fertility specialist are they one in the same?

You'll have to post how it goes.  GL!

  • I believe a fertility specialist and an RE (Reproductive Endocrinologist) are one in the same.  I am not sure if your OB ran any b/w or U/S, but the RE will.  He/She could also send you for an HSG to make sure your tubes are open and there is no problem there.  The RE can also have your husband to a S/A.  That will probably be the start.

    Good Luck.

  • Infertility specialist and RE are one and the same, I believe!

Look at it this way: There may be something very simple - or something that at least can be addressed - that's keeping you from getting KU. The RE is the person to help you figure out what it is, and what to do about it.

Your first visit will involve a lot of drawing blood and peeing in a cup, and a lot of  talking.

You probably won't get the test results until the next day, and some future tests could be based on the results.

But they may also want to schedule other kinds of tests to see if your uterus and tubes are ok.

Be prepared for a month in which you are constantly at the specialist's office.

I found the talking part of the first visit to be a bit intense. It took some time to digest all of the info that the doc was giving me. But it could be that my doc is just a big talker - not that I'm complaining, the more info the better. Anyway, because I'm 39, he predicted that my age was likely in play, and he gave me a ton of info about what was happening with my body, and what the office could/could not do depending on what they found out.

Oh, and have you met the dildo cam yet? It's an vaginal ultrasound machine, technically. They use it to check out your girlie parts. It doesn't hurt, but, well, it's a bit unusual the first time!

Good luck, and keep us posted.

  • Well said Joyful..... Dildo cam is like my best friend!

Like you I have no known problems, testing has all come back normal and SA was "excellent". Just had a follow up appt today and trying 2 more IUI's then possibly meds with IUI after that.   GL to you and keep us posted!

Do you mind me asking what the round about cost of IUI is?  If it comes to that, it'll be OOP for us.  : (

LOL!  Yes, yes I know what the dildo cam is.  Thanks for the great information!

Also, is it absolutely necessary for my H to go to that apt with me?  He's OOT until that night.  I wanted to get in as soon as I could.  He had SA several yrs ago and was able to do it at home and take it up to the hospital.  I'm hoping for that again.

  • My husband didn't come to my first appt either and it was fine. He gave me the orders for the bloodtests he wanted my husband to have. My husband was also able to drop off the sample.

I know what you mean about not knowing to cry or be excited. For me, it was a little bit like accepting defeat--something's wrong with me and I need help, but we did find issues that were corrected. Having a plan is the exciting part. Good luck!

    Butting in on this one...

First of all good luck with the specialist...I know it can be scary but after we went I felt so much better...like I had a plan! Hopefully you will feel the same.

As for the cost...my IUI's were $550...this included the sperm washing the IUI itself and an ultrasound.  I was on Clomid which is about $$ for the generic...or maybe $12..can't remember.  Now if you are on injectables, it will definitely cost more for the meds and they will monitor you with u/s more often.  I have heard some ladies having them cost as much as $2000.
