How many days in pre-school?

I figured I'd ask you ladies this question since you have older children:

How many days is your child/will your child be in pre-school?

We have a waiting list in my area for pre-schools, and I need to put DS on the wait list at age 2 to enroll by age 3.

I want to know if it's best for your child to go full-time every day, or part-time 3 times a week??

I think full-time may be overwhelming for a 3 yr old, and wanted your input.

TIA!?

  • aidan starts preschool this fall for 2 days week (at 2 years old). at 3 years old its 3 days, 4 years old its 4 days and then full day kindy here. i think that makes its easiest on them.

  • My DS is starting preschool next week.  He's SO excited!  He'll just be going two mornings a week.  Next year we'll do 3 as our kindergarten is 5 half-days.  I think though that if we wanted to send him for more, he would welcome it.  He was already upset with me that he wouldn't be bringing his sandwhich in a lunchbox for lunch or sleeping on the floor for naptime...haha (apparently he saw that on TV or something).

That's a pretty good rule to go by. I think 3 days at 3 years old would be good for him. ?

One of the pre-schools was trying to tell me full-time 5 days a week is important starting at age 3, but I think they just wanted my money. ; )?

  • I wanted to do 3 half days... but only 5 half days were available at a great school we *love*.  Couldn't pass it up.

It's going to be an adjustment.  But we'll make it work.  I'd rather have her in a good school for that time than in regular daycare.

  • My DD goes to preschool at her daycare.  She goes FT.  They have an awesome program with 3 levels and then a pre-k class based on age.  In the summer, they do a "Camp Discovery" program which ends at the end of the month and they go back to the regular school program after Labor Day.  Pre1 is 2 1/2 to age 3, pre2 is age 3 and pre 3 is age 4 and then they will be in the pre K program until they kindergarten.  My DD will end up not really doing the preK program as her b-day falls in June so she'll be in the summer program and then start kindergarten rather than do the preK program.  In each class, they concentrate on educating the kids in very age approaite ways and special classes - I have my DD signed up for a once week Spanish class and they have computer time and other great programs in addition to play time and other educational things - story times, etc.

  • Oh and my school district offers both full and part time kindergarter - some free FT and mostly fee based FT.  Part time is the norm but they know that a lot of parents work full time so they have the FT kindergarten option out there and there is also before and after school care offered at a fee.  My DD can't wait to take the bus to school and we still have 2 years to go.
