Does your toddler scream during dropoff?

My twins just started daycare Monday so I could start setting up my classroom.  Their teachers told me that they have done great - eating their lunch, playing with the other kids and even napping 2 hours both days.  They cried a little when I left yesterday (they figured out quickly that I was leaving) and today, clung on to me for dear life.  Their teachers had to pry them off of me in order for me to leave and hearing them scream at the top of their lungs as I left the building was so painful for me.  My question is, does your toddler do this everyday, or is there a point when they get used to the routine?  TIA!

  • He's been in daycare since he was 6 months, so he never really did it. Until recently. He's done it every day for a while. I think he's just at that age, because he's the same way at home if he can't see me or if I leave him with his dad to go to the other room.

  • My DS was the same.  He started daycare when he was 15 months, cried at first, then got used to it and stopped crying.  But lately (ever since he turned 2), he's been crying and screaming almost daily when hubby drops him off.  I think it's just a phase...At least I hope so!
  • No, but she's been there since she was 4 months. Sadly, our daycare is closing its doors in October, and once DD starts in her new place, I expect the full-on screaming. Am curious as to hear if others who started daycare around this age experience that, too.
  • it goes in phases.  This week she is crying every single day, but then at the end of the day she tells me she is having fun and doesn't want to leave  Stick out tongue

Some days she runs right in without a backward glance.

  • Yes DD does this - she stopped for about a week.  Then my DH and I went to Chicago for 4 nights.  I dropped her off this morning (first time since we got back) and she screamed bloody murder.
  • No.  She won't even look at me.

She's happy to see me when I pick her up.

  • DS cries pretty often when I drop him off.  He goes in stages where he doesn't care, but I would say more days than not, he cries.  It's only for a minute.  Sometimes he stops before I leave the room (if they give him food right away), and sometimes I can hear him stop before I'm even down the hallway.  It sucks, but it's just how he is and I know it doesn't last too long.

  • DD did when starting a new class.  And I have to say that 1-2 is the worst age for that.  Took DD a few weeks and no more problems.  It's just a foreign situation to them still so I'd give it a couple of weeks.  It'll gradually get better but it'll take a while at this age.

  • This is normal.  My son started daycare after he turned 1.  For the first two weeks or so, he cried every time I dropped him off.  After about a month, he was fine.  After 3 months, he loved it there.  Now, over a year later, he has made friends in his toddler class and runs over happily to greet them in the mornings.  Sometimes, however, he has a bad morning (as we all do from time to time) and cries when I drop him off - this is sometimes due to his "friends" being out absent that day or because he has been at home with me for a few days on vacation or a long weekend and gotten adjusted to that again.

Give it time.  It is a major adjustment for your children (and for you) because they (and you) are not yet accustomed to their new care providers.

  • YES!  DD was in one daycare from 3 months to 1 year but they sadly closed. She's now been in a new daycare for 3 weeks and clutches me like a monkey and screams "no no no" when I drop her off.  I'm wondering if it's the age (13 months) and it will pass or if she's not liking the new provider (I'm not 100% with her myself.)
