Change of work schedule

Anyone change to 4- 10 hour days instead of 5 days a week? I'm hoping to start this at work in the next few weeks and was wondering if anyone had done the same and how they liked it?

I requested the change because I wanted a little extra time with LO and needed an extra day to get all my non-work tasks (such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc) completed!

Re: Change of work schedule

  • good luck.  i wish I could work this and have a day off every week

  • Having a whole day off would be really nice, but I'm torn on the 10-hour day thing.  Unless you can go in pretty early, it'll be a long time away from home and the baby.

  • That's my worry too. I mean I am excited at the possiblity of a day off, but that is a really long time. I'm hoping I can do it on a "trial basis" for awhile and then switch back if it doesn't work out.
  • I did it although I worked from 230pm to 1230am most days. It is a long day (I am not sure what your hours will be) but the days I worked dayshift 7am-5pm I still had plenty of time at home with DS. I loved having the extra day off!

  • I just proposed this at work and got flat out denied.  Apparently everyone would love to do this.  And, at my work they would love it if we worked 10 hrs, 5 days a week, lol.  If you can do it I absolutely say go for it!
  • I used to do this before I had DS.  After having him, it didn't work for me, but my commute is at least an hour each way, so a 10 hour day became a 12+ hour day and I had no time to do anything.  Of course, it was nice to have the extra full day off.  I hope it works for you!

  • I did 4 10 hr days for a little while before dropping down to part time. I worked M-T-Th-F. I liked having a break mid-week. The days were pretty long but it was so nice to have a full day off with DD. Good luck!
  • I was going to do that when I returned to work from maternity leave but could not bring myself be away from LO that long. So I came back part-time (32 hours a week). I have Friday's off. GL!
  • I get to work that schedule in the summer while we are slow and they make for very long days but it is nice to have the one extra day off. I would see if you could do it for a trial period to test it out
  • At my office if you take a 4/10 schedule, then you are required to take a 1-hour lunch (instead of a half-hour). That 11-hour day is just too long for me.
  • Thanks for the responses ladies! I talked to my director and I think we are going to do it on a trial basis for awhile...to make sure it works for both me and my boss. Hopefully it will work for everyone involved!
