3rd Trimester

Can I safely use an enema for constipation at 34 weeks?

I have heard that sometimes midwives recommend enemas to induce labor and that is NOT my goal!  I am just insanely constipated.  I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and pre-pregnancy, my gastroenterologist told me it was safe to use enemas regularly to help with constipation (which I did). At this point, no amount of fiber or Colace is helping with the constipation.

Help! Tongue Tied

  • I know this stuff taste gross but prune juice worked awesome for me in the first tri.  Just 8 oz works great!

  • It is safe according to my OB.  I am afraid the constipation will only get worse the lower baby descends into the pelvis due to pressure.  I take docusate everyday, and it helps slightly.
  • BRan, Bran and more bran, I was completely constipated for the last week and started eating fiber one and shredded wheat and bran cereal and went like crazy this morning.  Besides can't you get dehydrated from an enema? or is that just diarrea?

  • I think prune juice would be better. It works really well and if you really can't stand the taste, drink a little water behind it.
  • Yes you can use an enema - I would advise that you use a tap water enema rather than a Fleet's enema, but even that shouldn't cause any major problems. Another thing you could try that might help, would be glycerin supositories. Good luck, IBS constipation PLUS baby in the way constipation must be miserable.
  • My doctor recommended prune juice, fiber one foods and colace.  She said an enema is not safe.  It's so funny how OBs can have such different opinions.  Wink  And yes, it only gets worse.  Sorry.
  • Thanks for the feedback. I called my doctor today and he was already gone, but the nurse said NO. The doctor never allows enemas, but recommends Metamucil, Fibercon, etc. and other fiber supplements, She also said that I could use Dulcolax suppositories.

    Wish me luck!

  • Just wanted to give an update....I had my 36 week doctor's appointment today, and he said that I can use an enema after all.
