Just lost it at work (vent)

Okay, so DH and I talked a lot last night about money and the babies and how we were going to do all of this.  I have been trying to stay positive and have hope that all will work out and usually I do pretty good.  However, I am at work and my mom just called and I lost it.  Out of nowhere I started crying about all my fears and how are we going to be able to afford two babies and everything they need.  I ahev also spent most of the morning on the phone with my student loan companies talking about my options.  One is letting me take a year derment, but the other will not budge and I am so upset.  It's the lower of the two payments, but I was so taken back by their inability to even let me have any time off from paying OR even reduce my payment (Sallie Mae).  Anyway, I am sure that is part of my outburst of tears.  DH admitted last night that it all hasn't fully hit him yet (I already knew this), and this added to it I am sure.   I just need some encouragment about how it is possible to do this emotionally AND financially and that it can work.  I know there was a similar post today, so maybe it's just a good day to freak out!  Thank you in advance for listening and your support!  Tongue Tied

  • I am a lurker here, and I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone with Sallie Mae..... I am in a corner with them, and getting really frustrated. They will not help me out at all, and they know that they are untouchable because even bankruptcy can not affect their amount owed...

Hang in there. We have been financially in a VERY tight spot for the last year or so, and it always seems like things work out like they should.

  • That stinks about Sallie Mae... they did defer part of our payments for us after our 1st was born.  Maybe try calling them again after the babies are born?  Although ours was in 2006, maybe they've changed the rules since then.

We have had so many financial scares over the past few years, including a deed-in-lieu on a home that we had on the market for 1.5 years.  Now we cannot get a home loan until a 3-year penalty period is up.  Even when things are horrible, things have a way of working out.  You still have some time to come up with a plan of how to afford things.  If it makes you feel better, the main expenses in the first year are diapers and food.  This is a huge part of the reason I'm going to try and BF our twins (although with a 3-year-old and 1-year-old I highly doubt I'll be able to stick with it for long).  If you can get a good stock of clothes, blankets, etc. before they're born, you won't have much to worry about on that front.

I know it's hard, but try to relax for now.  It's best for the babies and you.  Since your husband admitted that he hasn't fully grasped it yet, try asking him to take over some of the worrying and planning so that you can stay calm.  When I was pregnant with our 1st, my hubby took over our bill payments, etc. to eliminate that portion of stress for me!  It helped a lot.  Good luck : )

  • Lets make it hate on Sallie Mae day... when I tried to get my loans deferred or lowered one let me defer for a year... I just wanted to defer until I went back to work, but they let me have a year so I took it!

When I called Sallie Mae they were all set to let me defer... then asked if DH (who was the co-signer) would be working... and I said yes, but he doesn't pay my bills I do... they didn't care about that... they wouldn't defer it if he had income... but they lowered it for me... it made me so mad because my brother... who co-signed with my parents who both work, deferred his loans for over a year with Sallie Mae!  And it was just because he was being a slacker and not looking for a real job after graduating!   I almost called them after my mom told me that and asked them why a kid who just didn't have a job but was co-signed by parents could get loans deferred, but a mom of twins who was only wanting to take 5 months off while out of work but cosigned with her husband couldn't get deferred!

  • I am a planner/worrier by nature, and the minute we found out it was twins, I was in budget freak out mode.  MH doesn't get it (like your H, it hasn't hit him yet).  He thinks we make plenty of money and it should all just work out.  Even when I show him several Excel spreadsheets that I have made, showing our financial position under a few different scenarios, he just keeps saying that it will work out.  Grr.  Unless we grow a money tree, the budget is what it is.  I guess I am just trying to say that I understand.  I am sure it will all work out, but it's hard not to stress about it.  We'll have to watch what we spend and make some sacrifices, but I am sure it will be OK.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • I'm sorry you had a bad day. Are you sure you can't "forbear" the loans? Forbearance is different than deferment, though I am not sure of how, and you can forbear electively for three years with Sallie.
  • Thank you for your support. ?My hubby is taking over all the bills so I don't have to deal with it, so that is good. ?I was in school forever (I have a PhD) and deal with two loan companies: Great Lakes (Great, no problem) and Sallie Mae. ?To the previous poster: Sallie Mae will not lot let me defer or forbare, and they won't budge on my payment amount. ?It's not so so bad as my Great Lakes payment was the Big one (over $500 per month) and the Sallie Mae was less than $200, but when you are going to be home with twins and living on one income, all the bills we can cut out will help. ?I have to talk with DH about it and let him know what they said. ?We'll have to figure it out. ?They said if I don't make the payment they will report to the credit bureau, and I certainly don't want that. ?Thanks MoM's for the help!!
  • You could try consolidating with another lender and they could defer you. Call around and see if this is a possibility.
  • wow... sallie mae is a bunch of a@@ holes!!! they are giving me a hard time too they wont let me derfer my loans but i can put it on forbearance for 3 months at a time and everytime i have to do that i have to pay a $150 service fee and my intrest still accrues!!! They said i didnt qualify for any other type of help for a number of stupid reasons.  THEN!!!! i tried to get my loans that are w/ salluie mae transfered to AES (who might i ad has been fabuolos with my other student loans) and Sallie Mae apparently owns the loans and wont give them up to anything but a private bank!!!

Whats scary is how many of us in a short period of time have expressed issues with this one company!!! Makes me want to get a petition or something!!! This is outrageous.  DH said "F" sallie mae they want to be asses then we wont pay!

But i think we are all there.. im freaking out too and i work basically to pay my student loans.. only 25 more years of payment left!!!!  sad!!!

I am with you.  I was "granted" the three month thing as well but told that it was a one time thing and they would not allow it again.  They are a##holes!!  They don't care and they will screw up your credit if you don't pay them.  It's kinda crazy.  I too tried to consolodate my loans I have through them and like you said, they OWN them and wouldn't give them up, which is why I have two companies I deal with.  The other company Great Lakes was great, so understanding and kind.  Sallie Mae, not at all.  The first phone call I had with them the guy was a total idiot and when I asked to speak with a manager he transferred me back to the beginning automated phone system, it was total crap.  The only thing I am thankful for is that I don't have more money with them.  I was blown away when they wouldn't even lower my payment.  I was like, "Isn't it better for me to pay you something rather than nothing?"  They don't care, which is scary in this economy when you know so many people are out of jobs and have to be in a place where they can't pay.
