If we have another boy, name is already picked (Conrad - because its my maiden name). DH and I would love a family name for a girl and we both like last names as first names. Unfortunately, we don't have a lot of good options - I am only a few generations removed from my family who immigrated from Greece and Poland primarily - which leaves us with a lot of heavy ethnic names (who wants to name their girl Karantulous or Tenczar?).
On DH's side, we did discover his great grandmother's maiden name was Preston....which we actually like...but everyone else seems to think it is way too associated with a boy name. What are your honest opinions? We are not emotionally tied to this name at all, so honest opinions greatly welcome!
Re: Preston for a girl?
I've seen this recently- well, on this board, not IRL yet. I don't love it but would use it for a mn for a girl if it's sole purpose was to honor a family member.
I am a teacher and when I get my class list there are some names that are clearly girls, others clearly boys, others that I just don't know for sure. With Preston, I'd assume boy and I'd be one of hundreds to do the same for her whole life.

BOY all the way!
Maybe use it as a mn...that wouldn't be as bad...I have heard people suggest Presley too, which is nms but more feminine.
I think it sounds very masculine.
What is so wrong about traditional feminine names that people feel compelled to give their daughter a masculine name? I don't understand the psychology behind it.

LOVE IT. ?(Even more than Parker, lol.) ?I think you'd need a very feminine traditional middle name to balance it out, though.
Most people on this board hate any traditionally boy name for a girl, I'm obviously not one of those people. ?I don't get why everyone gets their undies in a bunch over the topic, personally. ?It's not like this is a new phenomenon (Ashley, Sidney, etc.)

Oh, believe me! I know all about it! We are an entire family of gender ambiguous names! My husband's name is ERIN (spelled just like that)! Both of us get crap for our names all our lives!
Andi is my nn. My full name is Andrea, which is definitely a girl's name. I'm all for nn's that are usually boys' names if the given name is a girl's name...like Sam and Samantha.
But, come on, Preston is boy's name!
I don't get the psychology behind going off on a tangent over names because of a simple question about whether people thought Preston could be a girl name. The very reason I asked was because, while I think its cute, I don't want to give my child a name that is going to give her problems her whole life. We aren't even really leaning towards the name, its just on the possibilities list, so I wanted to see what people thought, in general. It seems like the majority associate it with a boy's name (which I actually hate because I don't find it a very masculine name at all) - which was my major concern with it as well. A simple "it seems like a boy name" works to answer the question. Goodness gracious!
This. It's also strictly a boy's name.
i do think it is cute, but to girly it up, maybe spell it "Prestyn" or something.
Kara would be a good name for Karantulous.
Preston is a boy's name.
