soda question

is it okay to drink soda as long as i chase it with lots of water?

before i became pregnant, i drank soda maybe twice a month.  had no desire to drink.  now i gotta have it and i get bad headaches if i dont drink it.  all i want is dark soda(dr pepper/pepsi/root beer/ coke...and i dont even like coke) ... you know, the kind that's bad for you.  i have no more than like 12 oz a day if i do have some...usually i take a sip or two just to get the flavor and throw the rest away.  now the cravings are getting stronger and i want to drink it all.

Re: soda question

  • I drink rootbeer since I don't drink alot of caffeine.  Soda is fine just watch your caffeine consumption.  12 oz is absolutely ok to have in a day.

my doctor said no more than 20 oz of a caffeinated beverage a day. i would watch the amount of sugar and sodium you are getting in the soda you drink. i haven't heard of any bad affects that the sugar substitute the comes in diet sodas, so you might want to switch over to something like coke zero. i'm surprised that you can handle drinking soda. the bubbles bother my heartburn really bad. so i'd say, drink it while you can hah. it might not be like that forever!
  • My doc said it was fine as long as I did it in moderation - not having a six pack a day. And he said to make sure I am still drinking tons of water. I think you'll be okay, IMO.
  • i have that same prob.  before i got pregnant if i drank soda i would get sick.  now i am stealing it from my husband when he's not looking. lol  all i take is a couple drinks.

you should try the caffine free and drink water inbetween your sips of soda.

  • I would completely avoid it, atleast the big name brands!!  I just recently found out, and posted, that high fructose corn syrup contains detectable levels of mercury in it.  You can google it and read it yourself.  It doesn't seem that bad by itself but if you combine all the foods we eat w/ HFCS in it, it isn't good for pg women.  Unfortunately, all soft drinks contain it as the second ingredient.

Now, I'm completely with you as far as needing soft drinks!  I drank ginger ale all my first tri and starting have one Coke/ day for the last month or so.  I'm sick over it after reading the info.

I went to Whole Foods and got all natural cola w/ sugar and it tastes pretty good.  If you don't like Coke b/c it's too sweet then you may really like this cola b/c it doesn't have that syrupy taste.  I'm sticking w/ soft drinks made w/ cane sugar and only one a day if it has caffeine.  I LOVE SODA and just can't completely quit it.

Good luck.  Didn't mean to scare you off of it just an FYI.

  • thanks ladies!

and lol@brittany.  i will try that.  i went on a hunt for caffine free coke the other day and the stores i went to didn't have any.  i was like...i'm trying to do right...this isn't helping.

  • Yes it is just fine, just try not to have very much caffeine. I've craved coke too (very abnormal for me) so I got caffeine free diet coke and it hit the spot.
  • 12 oz of caffeinated soda a day won't kill you but you should be drinking a lot of water anyway. The headaches are probably from dehydration (soda helps dehydrate you because of the sodium). My doctor said you should try to drink about a gallon of water a day when you're pregnant because you require more fluids and have twice as much blood.

Mug root beer and A&W are caffeine free, just an fyi.

  • I don't chase it with water. I just drink it. It's not toxic, it's not alcoholic...

  • caffiene free is just as good as the regular stuff, that's what I try to drink if I'm really craving soda
  • Just get caffeine free! Sounds like you're fine though cause if you're not even drinking the whole 12oz you're really not having that much! I have a pepsi like once every two weeks cause I just have to have one every once in a while but mainly try to stay away because of all the sugar!

    This.

I have at least one 20oz Pepsi a day...sometimes two ((gasp)).

  • I think all rootbeer, other than Barqs is caffeine free as well as Crush orange, giner ale and sprite. Some store brand also make the dark sodas caffeinne free. i found a dark cherry cola-store brand that was caffeinne free. What about buying the caffeine free version of coke or pepsi?

But as pp mentions, some caffeine won't hurt. I try to limit it to one soda a day if I even have that. Plus Dh and I ususally end up sharing so I'm not having the whole thing myself, usually.  Maybe try the half cans, if you are worried about drinking, too much and since you throw it away and want to drink the whole thing, that might help, too.

i may have to try store brand root beers that are caffeine.  Bargs is my favorite soda...ever. i go to sams club just to get it...and that's a bad thing because theirs is so sweet
