Hi there ladies. I have an almost 3 year old who refuses to potty train. I am due in April and I want only 1 in diapers if I can help it. Does anyone have any magic ideas? I have tried the potty training party in 1 day, I have tried stickers, candy, games, bribery, threats..LOL..
HELP????
Re: Potty Training
I would probably back off the actual training, but indirectly address it in your household. Does he like bob the builder or something? Make a tool box and fill it with treats and decorate it with pics of bob (or whatever character he likes) and keep it up high in the batheroom. Whenever you use the toilet do a crazy potty song and dance and get yourself a potty treat. Praise DH and take him a potty treat after he goes. In the meanwhile, casually invite DS to use the potty, but be indifferent if he refuses.
Only change diapers in the bathroom. Make it clear that pee and poop ONLY belong in the bathroom. Remove attention during diaper changes- don't smile or talk (but don't address the dirty diaper). Make it so there is no positive reinforcement for soiling himself. I would casually offer the toilet during changes, but don't try to bribe with treats. Just ask if he wants to try, if he says no, tell him okay and put his clean clothes on and go about your day. If he asks about the potty treat, tell him "Of course! You can have one next time you go on the potty- you want to try?" and if he genuinekly tries, use your judgment about rewarding that. DOn't cave and give a potty treat if there is no potty behavior- but keep the treats positive, no pressure.
If you're brave, you can do away with the diapers... but count on more laundry!
I have used this technique with MANY kids and fhave had a lot of success. Good luck!
