Told not to work?

I'm a teacher and we're just getting ready to start back in the classroom to set everything up for the year.  Well, this year also happens to be the start of our new contract, which is still under negotiation.  I just got an e-mail today from our union president telling us not to set anything up in our classrooms until the contract is voted on.  If we vote to accept the contract, this would leave everyone with 1 day to set up their classroom before the students start.  Technically, that is the only day we are paid to work in our rooms prior to school starting, but I don't know a single person who doesn't spend at least a week before school starts setting everything up.

So I have mixed feelings....DS will be starting daycare for the first time, so not setting up my room early would give me more time with him (yay!), but I was also looking forward to trying to get everything done early so I could focus on family time and not be stressed with school stuff.  Eesh...I just hope our district can settle an agreement so we don't have to strike.  I definitely don't want to make up days at the end of the year!

  • As a teacher myself, I understand what you are going through  (but am not in the same situation). Try to make lists, do what you can at home, etc. If you have been teaching awhile, it really isn't as much as you might think. Hopefully, all will be resolved.

  • I am a teacher too but I know that I would need more than 1 daay to get my room ready- we have 4 days before kids come back although there are a lot of meetings, planning, etc. to do. I am going in one day a week ahead of time to get some things pulled out and set up. With only 1 day i would think you'd be more stressed and not as prepared to start the kids off with a good first week. Personally- I'd go in!
