Heartburn question

I have never ever had heartburn, until today. I don't know anything about it, or what kinds of foods can trigger it. I'm wondering if drinking tea triggers it? The only thing I had this morning was tea, and I had some severe heartburn. It's lasted all day, even after I stopped drinking tea. I drank some milk, hoping that will make it go away soon.

Re: Heartburn question

  • ive been having the Heartburn problem too .. does your tea have caffeine in it?! supposedly caffeine makes heartburn worse, so does acidic/spicy foods...

  • I had never ever had it before either until the last couple of weeks.  It's just one of the pluses to being pregnant I guess ;)  Just try to take something like Mylanta or Pepcid.

  • I've never understood why people drink milk - it has lactaise in it which is an acid. ?There are a lot of things that trigger acid reflux - caffeine is one of them. ?If it was caffeinated tea, then yes. ?Otherwise, it could have been one of the herbs in the tea. ?You can google the triggers - there are plenty. ?I would either anti-acid your heartburn, or keep some celery as a snack at work because it works naturally against heart burn.

  • I'm not sure if tea triggers heartburn but I can tell you that I have been chewing watermelon gum and it has been a lifesaver...my midwife said that the saliva that gum makes your body create is a natural antacid.  Good luck and I hope it's only a one time thing for you!
  • Yes it did have caffeine. I was also super pukey this morning, and I'm wondering if that had anything to do with it too.

Someone at work told me to drink milk because it's an antiacid. Because I'm still really nauseas, I'm afraid if I eat something chalky like Tums I"ll barf again.

Milk works like a charm for me! But only if I heat it up until it's warm and sip it. The heartburn goes away for me, every time.

  • My MW said that one of the causes can be diluting your natural digestive enzymes and not to drink for 30 mins before and after eating.  She also recomended papaya enzymes, they are tablets.  I chew a few before eating or if I feel some HB coming on and it helps a lot.  They are on the chalky side though.
  • Pepcid works well for me.

  • Milk is an acid neutralizer, like ice cream. That's why many things, like Tums contain calcium. That's also why they recommend drinking milk or some type of dairy to cool the heat of spicy foods.

For plain heartburn, I used Tums, though many have said Mylanta or Maloxx worked better for them.
