You think you have a small house?

The Bates family that the Duggars helped build their house lived in a 1,000 square feet with 16 kids before the Duggar's helped add an additional 3,000 square feet.  I would turn bat ship crazy living like that, even with the remodel.  Nuts.  Amazingly, they were having a 17th child, like when are you alone?

How many square feet do you have per person in your house?

We have 600 per person vs. the bates 66 square feet orginally and 220 after.  I think we live pretty tight, but we have a lot of communal space and not much bedroom.

Re: You think you have a small house?

  • Yikes! We have about 500 sq ft per person, 66 sq ft is freaking craziness.

  • We live in a 1,000 sq ft house with 2 kids and plan to have a 3rd kid while still in this house.  Considering this house is worth about $1 million dollars (damn Bay Area cost of living), we can't really afford to upgrade at this point.

This is the home where my MIL grew up. It actually has an addition on it. Inside is a small kitchen, small living space, and 2 bedrooms. The bathroom inside was added when she was 16--before that it was only an outhouse.

She was one of 15 children (thought it was 16 but my caption says 15--I think at least 1 died).

Anyway, there's no way that house is more than 850 sq ft.

  • My grandparents raised 8 kids in 900 sq feet (not exactly the same, but still a crunch). 1 bathroom. 2 bedrooms.

It's the reason I constantly roll my eyes when Kate Gosselin goes on and on about how they "needed" that ginormous mansion for their 8 kids.

    Um...no you didn't.

  • GHM that is craziness!  We have about 700sq ft /pp, but if you include animals it's only about 400, lol.  Seems comfortable to me.

In college, I lived in a 350sqft apt with a kitchen  along one wall and a small bathroom (that ironically included a jacuzzi tub, lol).

  • We have about 200 sq ft per person.  Could we use more? Definitely.  Will we be OK if we never move into a bigger house?  For sure.
  • It worked for them all those years.

  • Most families in England only DREAM about houses over 900sq ft. People visiting me think our house is HUGE (1600sq ft).
  • 700 for each of us (4ppl)
  • We had about 200sqft/per person in our old house. In this house, it's 500sqft/per person and it feels HUGE. Honesty, we were comfortable with 200/pp.

Ugh, that gets me too. Seriously, plenty of homes in my area have two or three bedrooms and one bathroom and about 850 sqft.  They were built between 1930 and 1950. People raised families with 3-4 kids in these houses and they were JUST FINE. People freak out and insist they need a bigger house when they have TWO kids. Oh noes! How will they ever survive with a bedroom for each of their kids but NO GUEST ROOM???

  • When all the kids are here, we have about 300 sq ft per person.  When it's just DH, DD and I it's about 600.
  • We have about 700-750 square feet (not sure exactly), which is about 175 sf per person.... tight but apparently not THAT bad!

  • We have 270 per person when baby comes. I think its fine. Its a 1345 Sq Ft house with a big garden. Its a normal size for a house in Ireland. You guys have massive houses!!

Too busy to update the pics for now ... :)

  • We have about 300 sq. ft per person plus a large unfinished basement for storage, laundry, etc. Even though the basement is not useable living space it still makes a huge difference because of all of the storage.
  • Right now we have 866 per person, but when we have the other baby it'll be 650.

When we first got married we lived in a 900sf condo with one bathroom. I was sure we'd end up divorced if we had to stay there. We need our own space...but I guess you do what you have to do, right?

She's crafty - and she's just my type.
  • I think we are certainly outgrowing our house and it's the 3 of us. Our house is a little over 1300sq.ft.

I'm not sure what it is per person and not sure if I want to.

My gma and gpa had 10 kids and a 2 bedroom house. No wonder most of the boys joined the military.

  • At the house we just sold, we had less than 300 sq ft per person. Part of that was the basement that we rarely used, though. And we had NO storage, which was the biggest issue.

When we move to our new house this fall we'll have almost 600 sq ft per person before we finish the basement. We're doubling our square footage and I can hardly wait. I'm most excited about the ample closet space and storage room, though.

  • I am one of these people...I need a guest room. all of our family is a LONG way away.

though I'd prefer that they stay elsewhere when visiting- they'd just try to camp on our couch if I gave up the guest room-and I am NOT having that!!
