First, let me say it has been months since I posted here. I got sucked into Facebook...I know many of you have been there!
Well, DS had been complaining of "wasps" in his hair for a few days and I thought maybe he had a headache. Last night at dinner, DH found head lice! We treated him with RID, but he still has quite a few of the dark brown nits (he is very blonde so we never could see the white ones) that I just couldnt comb out last night. Do we just keep combing them out? will those hatch or since we did the RID (steps 1-3) is it all gone? Just curious what pahse of this we are actually in! Do I have any hope that they are all gone and dead and I just follow up in 7 days with a second treatment?
Help!...
Re: Head lice advice
ditto pp... if you don't get them all out, they will just keep multiplying. also, anything you cannot wash on hot and do not want to sterilize or toss, stick in a plastic bag for a week .
one pedi I worked with swore by mayo and dawn. I believe it was put mayo in dc's hair overnight... comb and then wash with dawn (original soap). the mayo oils things up so they cannot stick, easy to pick 'em out. you do have to comb , comb, comb until they are all gone. and you may want to treat the entire house and everyone in the house... or at least check everyone.
makes me itch just thinking about it. I got lice at a slumber party in elem school. ick.
Halo is absolutely right on. We had a lice scare yesterday. 3 out of 12 kids at my DD's in-home daycare had lice yesterday. Thankfully, DD does not have it. I was talking with the DCP yesterday and she gave the exact same advice. She said that RID shampoo doesn't work great on the nits, just the adult lice. So if you go that route, you have to use it every day for 7-10 days to make sure you catch all the eggs as they are hatching. But she says and even better and faster way to get rid of it is to use some sort of oil (mayo) over night and then pick/comb it all out. As she picks the lice/nits out, she put them on a piece of tape so they can't "get away" (she was sitting in the driveway going through kids hair yesterday so as not to further spread it in her house)
She also washes EVERYTHING in her house, including the carpets. Anything that can't be washed goes into a sealed plastic bag for 2-3 weeks.
Luckily, she said lice really don't care for animal hair so your pets won't need to be treated. Also, lice don't really like dirty hair, either. So those in your family that are lice-free should not wash their hair (or as little as possible) until your house is lice-free.
My neice had it so bad when she was 3 years old. They fought it for 2 years. My mom used to go through her hair every other weekend that she had her, but her mom was not doing a thing to get rid of it.
After my mom passed away me and DH started trying to get rid of it. I finally called CPS to ask them what would they suggest in a situation like this. Her hair was just awful. The RID ruins the hair and is very toxic for the kids.
They told us that when a child is that bad, they suggest shaving their head. I hated that thought! So, when my neice was 6, we sat her down and told her what we thought of doing. We waited until she was out of school for the summer. My brother shaved her head and then let her shave his. She loved it.
It grew back very quickly and is so healthy now. She has been lice free for 3 years and still tells us thank you for getting rid of it.
Make sure you wash everything and put the stuff in bags like the other poster's said. The dirty hair thing is a myth though, so I would just make sure there is no brush, pillow or towel sharing. We have a rule, we do not share head bands, barrets, brushes, towels, hats or even helmets. Period.
