Reflux question

If your LO had/has reflux, how did your Pedi diagnose it? ?We've been trying to figure out whether Chris has colic, or reflux - but Zantac did nothing to help so far. ?Dr. keeps saying it's NOT reflux b/c he's not spitting up ?- but...he is spitting up some- he seems to just swallow it right away, so it's hard to tell. ?He arches his back constantly, and has screaming fits that are characteristic of colic, but the two are so similar in how they present - how might I get my Pedi to consider that he still may have reflux, and perhaps then we can try Prevacid or Prilosec? ?

We also have him on Levsin drops, for intestinal gas, (symethicone/Mylecon did nothing), and I have eliminated dairy completel for 3 wks now (EBF'ing) - but nothing seems to help much.

Meantime, we continue to employ techniques from Happiest Baby on the Block, which get us by in a crisis but do not get rid of the problem. ?

Re: Reflux question

  • Our Pedi listened to my description of feedings and diagnosed it that way.  However, TJ is a "happy spitter" in that he spits up here and there but doesn't scream through it or anything like that.  Right now he is only on Mylanta.  We do smaller feedings closer together and these two things seem to work.

You may need to go to a gastro to get a definite diagnosis and perhaps diff. meds.

    Good luck!

  • Our DS has severe reflux. It was all trial and error.  Sounds to me that your LO has silent reflux which means it doesn't come out, it just comes up and back down, burning all the while.  The winning combo of Alimentum formula and 5 mgs of prevacid a day were it!  He is great and happy, too bad it took us 6 months to get straight.  He still needs the meds at 9 months.  I would recommend a pediatric gastro intest dr.  good luck!
Finally after 15 months and 2 IUI's we have our gorgeous baby boy! • not all reflux = spitting up.  Silent reflux = pain, but no or little spit up.

Grayson has silent reflux - we think. He screams during most bottles, rarely spits up - when he does it's a small amount and he swallows it back down.

he's on prevacid but it's not doing the job we hoped it would do- we also need Mylanta in a few bottles/day.... the bottles that we put mylanta in he chugs down with no problem- so that is why I really think it's acid related- though the ped GI is not 100% sure it is.  He's having me wean Gray off the meds to see if there is any change ... if he's still the same, we'll try another formula because he said that a milk protein allergy can present exactly the same as reflux, too (not all milk allergy = blood in stool, which Gray does not have)

most babies will outgrow reflux by 6mo, when they sit up more and their LES matures, and they eat more solids that stay down easier.  I pray this is the case- since meds aren't really doing the job- and it breaks my heart to see him in pain when eating. Eating should be enjoyable- and it's just not for him.

If your pedi isn't exploring other options- i would see a ped GI. Many regular pedis are not that familiar with true GERD in babies. (I am a drug rep and sold prevacid to pedis for many years.... many are just not comfortable Rxing meds for reflux - they feel it will go away, etc)

  • DD does not spit up at all and has severe reflux ... it's just called "Silent Reflux" for those that don't spit up. She even had the Barium X-Ray to diagnose it and it's definitely severe reflux.

She is on Prevacid and that seems to work better for her. We also saw a GI Dr. and he prescribed her Reglan. It worked for awhile but one of the side effects were seizure like symptoms, and she had that, so we just took her off of it.

    GL!
