Cold Sore Remedies?

Hi All,

I am 14 weeks and 5 days along....work has been pretty stressful lately and I am doing a reading at a wedding this weekend, which means that a cold sore has popped up! Does anyone have any good remedies to take care of this?

Before I was pregnant I would take Valtrex and use Abreva which worked amazingly well, but I would rather do something natural if anyone has any good suggestions?

Re: Cold Sore Remedies?

  • wet an unlit match and put it on the cold sore for about 15-20 seconds.  Repeat 2 -3 times a day.  It should help heal it in a day or two.

I know it sounds weird but it works.

  • abreva should be fine. I have used it as needed throughout my pg.
someecards.com - I support Newt Gingrich's idea of colonizing the moon if it'll help me get away from Newt Gingrich.

  • I had one pop up on Monday and I called my dr and she said Abreva is perfectly fine to use while pg. I might still use the match trick too!
  • I have one right now too.Super Angry   I use peroxide on mine.  Damp a cotton swab in peroxide and rub the sore.  It dries it up and helps it heal quickly.

  • Valtrex is ok during pregnancy. I got a cold sore and I took the standard dose (two gigantic pills, 12h apart). This was ok'd by both PCP and OB. I believe it's also used daily for women with genital herpes in the last tri to avoid a breakout close to birth.  It's category B, same as Tylenol. It's really the only thing that actually works.

  • First of all, relax. Most of the time cold sores are triggered by stress, if you stress about the cold sore being there it will just make it worse. (I know crazy but once I learned that my cold sores didn't last as long) Second avoid acidic things if you can especially tomatoes, they can help give the cold sore staying power.

I use a product called Sunrider Sunbreeze. It is sold in the same way that Arbon and Avon and stuff like that is so you would have to find a representative in your area, but it is all natural. I just put it on the second I start to feel that tingle and if I keep on top of it and reapply every hour or so for the next 24 hours, the cold sore never has a chance to pop up. If you do get a hold of some I wouldn't put it on if the cold sore has already popped up. it can get a bit ugly as the product dries out the cold sore.

  • I haven't had to take any yet, but I keep Valtrex on hand and would take that since it's a class B medication.  Before I was pregnant, I also SWORE by this trick... I'd hold nail polish remover on a cotton ball on the sore... it would dry it and shrivel the skin and help it scab up quickly.  Esp if the blisters had already formed, I'd pop them, soak up the liquid and then hold the acetone on there.  I probably have some sort of cancer from breathing in the fumes, but we cold sore sufferers know how it is lol.
