I am having horrible insomnia, and my ob suggested unisom. However, the lactation consultant said it could be harmful as it does pass thru breastmilk. Thoughts?
I would give her a bottle for the 3am feed, but sherefuses bottles in the middle of the night.
Re: taking unisom while breastfeeding
You can take Benadryl/Tylenol PM, as far as I know.

If your doc said the Unisom is safe, then take the Unisom. I saw where the other posters recommended Benadryl and Tylenol PM -- well my understanding of it is the drug in Unisom that makes you sleepy is the same drug in the Benadryl and the Tylenol PM. It would be safer to take the Unisom than the other drugs because the Benadryl and Tylenol PM has other medicinal effects that you don't need. Oh, and I'm specifically referring to the regular Unisom tablets and not the geltabs. The geltabs have a slighly different drug make-up.
editing to add: I went ahead and looked it up to make sure I wasn't off my rocker and the active ingredient in unisom is diphenhydramine which is the same active ingredient in Tylenol PM.
I didn't know what Unisom was made of.
It is indeed diphenhydramine, which is the same as Benadryl, which is the same as Simply Sleep, which is the same as the sleep aid half of tylenol pm.
