2nd Trimester

Weight Gain by 22 weeks

Well I just got back form my dr's and he told me that Ive gained too much weight for where i am in my pregnancy. His exact words were Im headed for over 200 lbs by the end, and by this point i should have only gained 1-2 lbs!!!
That has me confused, I started the pregnancy at 157 and now weigh 168, that only 11 lbs! Everything ive read says that i should have gained 3-5 lbs in the first tri and 1-2 lbs a week after so a normal weight gain would be 12- 23 lbs...
He's crazy right?

Re: Weight Gain by 22 weeks

  • Interesting....how tall are you? Do you have other risk factors that your doc might be factoring in?

I started at about 160 and am now 168--so pretty darn close to your gain. My midwife is perfectly fine with my weight; she's just sure to remind me to keep exercising and eating well.

  • I think your weight gain sounds pretty normal. I am 21w2d and I have gained between 11 and 12 lbs so far.

Off topic: I was just looking at your bio, and it is crazy to see how different you and your DH look now! You were like babies back then! LOL! Very cute!

  • yea i think he is crazy! my doctor hasn't said anything to me and i've gained about 8 pounds as of 20 weeks.  i think that is very normal and you are fine.
  • im right there with you....but my doctor hasn't said anything like that....I guess I will see when I go back next week

  • I'm about the same as you at 20 weeks.  I was down early on due to being sick but my doc was actually happy that I gained the weight.
  • I gained 12 lbs so far and Doctors exact words were, "your gaining weight perfectly ontrack!".  Unless you were overweight I have no idea why your Doc would say that!
  • I've gained 25lbs so far and I was a size 10 to begin with.  Doctor thinks it's fine.

Maybe you heard wrong?  Onnly gaining 1-2lbs at 22 weeks is way too low unless you have a medical problem or were overweight to begin with.

If you've gained 11lbs and you're more than halfway through, how exactly are going to gain 200lbs total?  You should gain less than 15-20lbs from 22-40 weeks....your doctor sounds like a quack, I'm not sure that would be someone I would trust.

  • I think it depends on whether you were a healthy weight at your starting weight. If higher than a BMI of 25, your doctor may not want you to gain as much as someone within the normal range.

  • Thanks ladies,

I feel better now. I was 157 lbs when i got pregnant and im about 5'6  i was not super skinny but not overweight at all. I really dont know what he was thinking when he said 1-2 lbs at this point! Ive gained more than that in boobs alone!

I think it may have to do with how im carrying, i look like ive gained more weight than i have because its all out front....

heres what i looked like before, this pic was actually the week before i got preggers

  • I'm 22 weeks and I have gained 11 pounds. My doctor said that was perfectly normal. 1-2 lbs sounds a little impossible to me...

  • You look great....and I am not an MD but I think you are totally on track.  Maybe consider consulting another MD?

  • Ha ha I'm 14 wks and I've already gained 10lbs Big Smile My has never said anything, and when I was pregnant with DD and gained 50+ lbs he never said anything.

At the end of the day if your blood pressure is good, no diabetes and no other complications the "extra" weight you gain are simply pounds you'll have to work hard to lose later.

I'm just trying to focus on eating healthy, exercise, drinking lots of water and getting plenty of rest.

Also keep in mind some women have larger babies, I gained a lot of weight but I also had a 9+lb baby!

  • at my 24 wk appt my mw told me i was up to 18lbs and i got a you go girl... but my my calculations from what they tell me at each appt im at 16.5... either way i think your fine because according to most books your within the weight frame

  • Actually I'm 22 weeks and have only gained 2lbs. I was average weight to begin with, and I have no medical problem. So gaining that little isn't "too low".

I don't think the OP has a problem, as everyone gains at different times in their pregnancy. As long as you're eating healthy and aren't pigging out on junk food, you'll be fine.
