s/o...anyone not want a bigger house?

All I want is an extra bathroom. Having two kids fighting over who gets to poop first gets old. Otherwise, I like having a smaller house (3 br, 1300ish sq. ft, I think). I wouldn't like the upkeep of a larger home. I can keep my small home very clean, and we are not packrats so storage isn't a huge issue. We have a very large storage closet in the back of our house, plus a large one inside. When we buy a house, we definitely do not want anything larger than 2000 sq ft, and that big even seems too much for us.

Re: s/o...anyone not want a bigger house?

  • Our house is a bit over 2000 sq ft.  There are only 3 of us.  I often say i wish we had a smaller house.  We both have big families, and it's actually perfect for parties.  That's when i appreciate the size.

  • No...we have plenty of room but the layout sucks. I'd like to redesign the interior of ours to use the space more wisely.

This is what I tell DH.  I can barely keep up with the house we have, let alone a bigger one.  Honestly, I wish our house just had a better lay-out.  We have some spaces that just aren't very useable for us.  DH thinks we need a bigger house because we would have more space to store stuff, and it would cut down on the clutter laying around.  Honestly, DH, if you would get rid of some of your crap, then we would have plenty of space.  Sorry.Big Smile

  • I would downsize if I could. Our house is way too big for the 3 of us. It is nice for when family needs storage.
  • I don't want a bigger house.  I just want another bathroom and to be better organized.  That Clean House show is my favorite right now.  I wish they'd come here!  :)

  • I love our house.  I do wish we had one more bedroom or a separate office for when the kids are older.  Right now the girls share a room, but we'd like everyone to have their own room when they're in high school and maybe middle school, you know?  We can't do that and have me have an office.  Other than that, I really really want a pool and to be closer into the city.  We're actually selling our house right now and a lot of the houses we're looking at are smaller square footage, though the same number of bedrooms.  We're ok with that...well, I am, DH is wavering.  It'd be nice to be closer to my office, the girls' preschool, DH's work, etc.  We'll see if the house sells and then go from there on what we get.  I don't think I want much bigger than we have.  I guess maybe 5 bedrooms or 4 plus an office so everyone could have their own when they're older and we could have a guest room for now.  We do have a lot of OOT family and it's a PITA when they're on an air mattress in my office or the playroom, which will be the only options when DC#3 comes.  I work a lot of late nights and the girls are up early plus we have to tiptoe around the playroom when the ILs are here b/c FIL goes to bed as early as the girls (if not earlier).  It's doable, though.  Maybe it would encourage people to come less often or get a hotel.  Surprise
  • I was like the 3 little bears. First house 1500sqft 1 and 1/2 bath. Too small. Second house 2800 sqft 2 and 1/2 bath plus jacuzzi tub. Too big (for 3 of us). House 3..2100sqft 2 and 1/2 baths...Just Right!

  • We're moving in a few weeks- from a 1700 sq ft townhouse with 3b/3ba to a 1300 sq ft house with 1.5 baths.  I'm so excited about having fewer bathrooms to clean!  We will most likely put in some built-in shelves, possibly a small addition if there will be more children, but I think it's going to be perfect.  We cared way more about having a big shady yard and a garage for DH than a large home.

  • Layout is a huge part of it - our old house was 1800sq ft and this house is 1500 sq ft and it seems bigger than the old one.

The only thing I really want is a slightly bigger kitchen, otherwise I'm fairly happy with my house size.

  • Right now I don't...even though all 3 of my kids share 1 room.  If I wanted a much, much bigger house we could easily get one just by moving the burbs.  We just don't want that right now.  We like where we are & I like having to be picky about what comes in our house.  I especially like not having a lot to clean.  We have a 1050SF bungalow w/ another 700SF finished in the basement.  I'd like to finish the rest of the basement just for a bigger playroom/family room but otherwise I am pretty content.  When the kids get older we may upgrade in size but right now I don't want to.

  • Ours is 1800 sq ft and it's perfect. The only thing I'd change is a bigger back yard.

  • Our home is fine for us.  I would like to finish the basement.  It adds 500 sq. ft. more and can be a playroom (most of the time) and a guest suite (it has plumbing already for a bathroom) since we will be losing our guest room when #2 arrives.

I can't keep up with any more cleaning than that.

  • We want something bigger than our small apartment (about 700 square feet) but we don't want a big house ever.  We want about 1200-1500 sf I think.  We both grew up in 1200 sf houses that worked very well with three kids, so that's aout what we want.
