2nd Trimester

Anyone wait/ have to wait until 2nd trimester to

have 1st OB appt? If so why and how did it go? I can't see my ob until Oct 1st when I'm 13 weeks d/t insurance switch with DH's job change. Did the doctor wonder why you waited until 2nd tri to go in??? I've gone in pretty early (6weeks) with last two pregnancies, so I'm just wondering what it will be like going in so late this time... TIA

  • There's no way I'd wait that long. I'd go to a clinic before then. Too many risks.

    Huh? Risks of what?

OP: many OBs don't see patients until 12 weeks. While 13 weeks may not be ideal (you won't be able to get an NT scan, for instance, if you wanted to do that) the safety of you and baby certainly won't be compromised (particularly since you've been through this before and know basic dos & don'ts).

  • i waited til almost 9 weeks (this is my first pg)...

and found out there were 2 in there!

it would be a mega shock if u found out u had multiples at 13 weeks!

But it wouldn't be a shock to find out earlier??  Silly.

    Ditto jenny1980.

  • I saw the doc at 4 weeks when we got our positive test and then again at 8 weeks.  We did an u/s at 12 weeks and that's when we found out it was twins (shock).  We only had an u/s because I had some pain in my side and have a history of cysts.  Otherwise I would have had an NT scan at 13 weeks and found out it was twins then.  My cousin who has a healthy baby girl didn't see her doc til 11 weeks and has only one u/s at 18 weeks.  She pais out of pocket for a 3D u/s because she wwanted to see more.  I think it depends on your OB and their policy as well as if you are considered high risk due to age, previous losses, etc.
  • Did you not have risky pregnancies before?  I had a friend wait until 16 weeks.

I'm sure it's fine, but that would be psychological torture for me... I'm not the most patient person!
  • Yeah, both my pregnancies were perfectly normal, so I'm not too concerned. As far as risks, I can't think of any... I'm not the most patient, but I do know I'm pregnant and there's not a whole lot they do before the big ultrasound...
  • You can actually get the NT right up to 14 weeks, so that is still a possibility.  I waited until 13 weeks to go in this time and OB had no problem.  Obviously you know to take a PNV with folic acid -- not much else to do before then.
  • This is also my 3rd baby and with both of my previous pregnancies I was also in there first thing like at 8 weeks but this time due to insurance reasons as well I just saw the doctor this past Friday for the first time and I was 16w5d, they did not say anything to me and it really was not a big deal at all, they just did all the normal bloodwork a pap and listened to the babies heartbeat and rescheduled me next week for a ultrasound. I did have a ultrasound early on like 6 weeks at the ER for spotting but other than that, this was my first appointment.
  • My OB generally doesn't see you until 12 weeks, unless you've had a prior miscarriage or chronic health issues. After my m/c, she saw me at 8 weeks and did an ultrasound to verify it wasn't ectopic and that there was a heartbeat. If I was bleeding or cramping, she would've seen me sooner.

If you don't want to wait until 12 weeks you can always find another doctor or ask yours if there's any way to see you sooner. Although check with your insurance to see if they'd cover that or if you'd have to pay for it.

  • I didn't see my OB until I was 12w 4d. I went in to have a test to confirm at about 4 or 5 weeks and then I had a registration/paperwork appointment at 8 weeks. I was worried all the way up until the appt and especially after all the girls on the 1st tri board were posting about u/s at 6 and 8 weeks. I wouldn't worry too much though (: I think its pretty standard some places! GL

  • I am seeing my OB for the first time tomorrow. I saw my family doctor for a 12week physical and for a refferal to the OB. I am pretty excited for tomorrow since I hope I can hear the heart beat for the first time :)
