back to work schedule

i have been looking at the "working moms" board, but i thought i would post this here thinking some of you might be working on this too.  has anyone decided what their back to work schedules will be?  i work full-time, and i don't think i will be able to make the leap to part-time...at least not right away.  so what is your combination of work, telecommuting, days off, etc.?  i just want to present my boss with a couple of reasonable options.  thanks for your help!

Re: back to work schedule

  • I get 17 weeks of maternity leave...so I will go back full time after that...my company does have a part time option for us if we need it though.

But I think I might be ready to go back to work after 4 months at home!  hehehe  Being at work will probably be like a vacation!

  • I have no options here; I will be coming back full time and not telecommuting or not coming back at all.  I guess I should just be happy I have a job!  I am so jealous of SAHM's!  Sad
  • I am going to be a SAHM but if I wasn't, I'd be going back FT after 18 weeks. My job doen't have the option of being part time or telecommuting.

17 weeks?!  That is quite a good maternity leave for the states.  My job offers what is required for FMLA up to 12 weeks.  However if I take 12 weeks I either won't get paid for all 12 or I won't have any time left to take off if the baby is sick or I just need a vacation etc. etc.  I have decided to follow suit with many of the other working mom's I've talked to and go back after 8 weeks.  I expect to get paid for all of these through short-term disability/short-term income protection.  If that runs out after week 6 (for vaginal birth) then I can supplement with sick and vacation days etc.

I think my DH is trying to take off 3-4 weeks.

I have talked to a lot of people about this who work and have little ones and they advised that I would probably want and need to take off sometimes after the initial leave period as well.  Also, my working schedule is already relatively flexible in that I may opt to come in late/leave early/or work from home occasionally as needed so that helps.

  • P.S. I don't envy stay-at-home moms.  I like having a career, I make good money and I think being around other grown-ups helps to protect sanity.  My mom worked and was an awesome role model for me.
