Travel and FA

Happy Monday!

Over the weekend DH and I were talking about our growing interests in FA (we are currently looking to buy a house, and then we hope to dive into getting set up for FA next year) and we were talking about travel. What are the rules about traveling while in a FA program? I mean, in terms of taking the kids on vacations?

(unless you live on Canada border maybe).

From what I know from my cousins, still difficult to do when you liveon the border.  My aunt and uncle finally gave up and tend to take their kids to Canada once they turn 18 :)

  • Travel -

In-state: up to 72 hours without written approval - we just have to let our agency know that they'll be going to Austin with us.

In-State: over 72 hours requires approval from the judge and caseworker

Out-of-state: Difficult, but not unheard of.

    Out-of-the-country: find respite :P

  • In PA we have to notify the agency and get the bp (before tpr) or the court's (after tpr) permission if we will be staying overnight whether it is in state or out of state. Day trips we do not have to get permission for even if they are out of state.

I imagine international travel would be close to impossible.

  • Maybe its just my state, but I know plenty of foster parents who've taken placements out of the country - requires permission for sure, but not nearly impossible
  • leaving the country requires a passport, which also requires SSN, which a LOT of the times you may not get or do not have. i'd venture with the children to surrounding states, but across the country, probably not. and out of the country, most definitely not. i'd think in a lot of states it would be a headache.
  • The baby we are adopting is a foster child in Canada and it was a requirement from them that she visit us before they would place so in Jan. she was here for three week. We loved it but miss her now.

They had to get a passport and the FP was willing to travel and stay with us while they were her.
