S/O on Toothpaste - swallowing fluoride?

When I took DD to the dentist at just over 2, they said to use a little bit of fluoride toothpaste and it was ok if she swallows it.  So I have and she swallows most of it.

Am I the only one?  Now I am worried!

  • That's what happens at our house too.  Gracie is just learning to spit most of it out.  We use the kid toothpaste because it has less fluoride and we only use a little.

Most water has added fluoride so I can't imagine a little extra from toothpaste is going to hurt.

  • We do the same thing but I use such a tiny amount that I don't even worry about them swallowing it.

  • No. Since switching B to flouride, she still swallows that too.

I'm not really concerned though. We try to get her to spit in between but she'll only spit at the end.

  • Yeah, the amount of toothpaste is like a tiny dot/smear over about three of the bristle clumps.  Not a lot.  For some reason she freaks out if I ask her to spit? Huh?
  • I asked about this at our dental appointment last week and they said that water if fine, but the fluoride in toothpaste is so much more concentrated that it should not be used in children who are too young to reliably spit.

interesting... out of curiosity do you go to a ped dentist or a family dentist?

    Family dentist.

  • our pediatrician said to start using flouride tooth paste on dd at age two.  we use the kids bubble gum flouride kind, she actually lets me brush finally but doesn't spit. I'm not super worried because I put so little on it just covers the brissles lightly.
