3rd Trimester

Weight Advice

At my July 16th appt, one of the dr's at my practice told me I needed to watch my weight because in the 2nd trimester I had gained 23lbs (I only gained 2lbs in 1st).  Since then, I have been watching what I eat.  Nothing drastic at all.  I went to the dr's again 2 weeks later on 7/31 and had only gained 1lb and nothing was said about my weight.  Here I am a week and a half later and I think I've lost that pound.  That would mean NO weight gain in 4 weeks (as of this Thursday).  Should I be concered?  I'm eating and baby is as active as ever!  Just wanted to have an idea before I call the dr. TIA!

Re: Weight Advice

  • I would ask your doctor at your next appt.  It probably depends on what your weight was before you got pregnant.  I gained weight in spurts earlier on as well, so maybe that's what's happening to you?  As long as you're eating enough healthy foods and getting enough calories you're probably fine.

  • This happens all the time to GD patients. Changing your eating habits will cause you to lose weight (your weight, not the baby's), so it does not necessarily mean that the baby isn't gaining weight.  I am 31 weeks pregnant, and have only gained a total of 14lbs because I am on the GD diet and eating healthier than I ever did before I was pregnant.

    So don't worry too much.

  • Thank you ladies! I'll ask at my next appt and update you.
  • I don't have much experience in this, but I have to think that your body is taking what it needs for baby first and foremost.  As long as you are not starving yourself you and baby will be fine.  Weight gain can totally vary - sometimes large gains, sometimes no gain.  Use common sense, be healthy and listen to your doctors.
  • I wouldn't worry if babies active and your measurements are all good then you and baby should be fine. I haven't gained anything so far this pregnancy and I'm 29 weeks. I would just bring up your concerns at your next appointment.?
