Any tips or advice on how to soothe my baby with jaundice?

He is in his little tanning bed except for feedings and we are having a hard time soothing him while he is laying in it.

I have is swing on making the heartbeat sounds and we have a vibrating pad underneath the bed. I feel so terrible when he is crying and I can't pick him up. I am praying that his bilirubin?levels will go down tomorrow.?

  • I didn't have to deal with this.  I pray that it gets better for you.

Does LO have to stay flat while he is in it?  Can you put him in his bouncy/vibrating seat while he is in it?

  • My DD was on a Biliblanket for her first week. Can you use that? It is a paddle that you wrap them in a blanket with it and it has a long stiff cable attaching to to the light box thing. When she was in that I could hold her. She was in it 24/7 unless I was changing her diaper.  ITs so hard. I wish you all well

My nephew was in the Biliblanket and I wish he could use it. He is in a flat bed with lights underneath. ?

Yes, he has to stay flat. It is a big bed so I can't even sit it in my lap to bounce him.?

  • Been there girl! My LOs was so high she almost had to be hospitalized. Why can't you hold your LO? We held her while she was in the blanket. GL

It's not a blanket...it's a bed and he just lays on top of it with a blanket. It looks just like a tanning bed with only the bottom.?

  • My son has jaundice too, but since my insurance doesn't cover any at home treatment, I haven't had to do any of that.  What are your baby's levels at?

He was at 14.1 when we left the hospital yesterday and today he was a 16.7.?

  • Roll up a blanket or towel and place it around his head, kind of like the neck stabilizer in a carseat. It will help him feel more secure because he's not swaddled. You can also try laying him on his side or tummy  - my son slept way better on his tummy in the bed.
  • Have you tried running the vacuum cleaner?  It works for my nieces.

    Hang in there!

  • I'm sorry, I had to deal with this for 5 days and it does suck.  I literally would stand at this bed and put my face next to his and make a shhhhhhh noise for hours when I couldn't soothe him.  Sometimes I would have to take him out to calm him then try to put him back.   I hope your levels go down and you can get rid of the bed.

I also used a paci which helped and I rolled blankies and put them in the little "bag" to make him feel like he was held.

  • DS was in this in the hospital, I found two things that seemed to help. One was a pacifier, we are EBF and this did not interfere at all, it helped some, Also I took receiving blankets and rolled them to make a long roll & thenmade a U shape with it and tucked it in the little bag thingunder his bum and along each side of his body, I think it made him feel like he was beign held, a bit more secure. Good Luck!

  • The soothie pacifier worked for our DD. It did not interfer with BF. She slept underneath the warm lights most of the time.

Also, the levels of jaundice peak at 3 or 4 days old. It should go down next test. Supplementing with formula after BF or with pumped milk couldn't hurt. You need to get baby to poop to flush the Bilirubin out of their system.
