Our friend was over and was going to take some Ibuprofen for a headache and unbeknownst to us laid them on the table while getting water. Grace got a hold of them and we *think* she swallowed one. We cant find it anywhere so we're assuming she did. It was only one 200 mg tablet but I tried to call her pedi to see what we should do and they referred us to poison control.
Moral of the story is...they said they don't worry about such a low dose. SHe'd have to take 10 of them to have any damage done. I figured one wouldn't mean a trip to ER but I panicked a little. It was hard not to yell at my friend and she felt just awful. She cried. Thankfully I kept my cool until I found out it would be ok and was able to then tell her it was ok.
A little scary though. Thank god my friend doesn't take Vicodin or anything.
Re: Just had to call Poison Control.
Very scary. Don't feel bad about calling! My aunt works for Poison Control and says she'd rather have someone call over "nothing" than because there's a life-threatening situation.
Glad she's OK!
I'm not sure how old Grace is but did you ask her if she "ate" the pill? (or is she too young to understand?). It is doubtful she ate it only because they all taste nasty (except baby aspirin of course...those are yummy). Years ago when they still gave baby aspirin to kids my nieces got into them. The older one was "feeding" them to the younger one. My SIL rushed them to the hospital and they both had their stomachs pumped. The baby only had one and the oldest one had 3. Of course now we know that they each could have eaten a whole bottle and they would have been OK. That is why they make the bottle so small. But now there is the issue of Reyes Syndrome...which you never hear about anymore.
Anyway, glad you DD is OK. You friend needs to be more mindful what is put at her level. They can reach further than anyone imagines.
DH had to call them not long ago. I was at work and he left DD to use the potty and she was in there eating Desitin! Apparently, there's nothing toxic in it. Poison Control was great. They even followed up with us a couple of days later to make sure she was okay. We got a letter from them the other day and learned that they are half funded by local governments, but the rest of their funding depends on donations so we're going to donate to them.
I'm glad your DD is okay!
