Yeah, I would not give that to DS either and if it were given by my Mom or my brother I would totally say something - anyone else I think I would keep my mouth shut and not let him use it.

Depends on the age, depends on the area, depends on the maturity of the kid for me. We don't shoot, and we live in a very populated area, so I don't see DS ever having one. But I don't have a problem with mature gun ownership, even BB guns.
(And I'd fully expect that anyone who wanted to buy DS a BB gun to check with me first.)
10? And a hunters safety course? And sil doesn't care? What's the problem here? I'm sure DS will have one before then, but we will raise him to respect fire arms- just like MH was.

It's not a problem for them. I would be uncomfortable with it myself. My SIL's family are big hunters.
My family are big hunters and that would be the norm for us. I'm sure my oldest DS had a BB gun by the time he was 10. He also had a pellet gun, then a 22 and whatever they use for deer and now has a pistol and a CWL. My oldest DD does too...although she didn't have a BB gun or pellet gun. We live in the country and people hunt in the state park all around us.
