Trying to Get Pregnant

do you ever just let a yeast infection run its course?

i'm self diagnosing today and have a feeling i'm a few days into a mild YI.  at points in the past when i've felt similar symptoms (just itching and some discharge), i've just let it go and it has gone away within a week or so.  i never really thought about whether or not that was a medically stupid decision before.  what's the scoop on letting a YI just do its thing?

i'm too lazy to google whether treating a YI could mess with my 2ww so if you throw in some info about that too, that would be lovely.

Re: do you ever just let a yeast infection run its course?

  • I've never done that...I've always treated it as soon as I knew what it was.  I don't know if there are any consequences for letting it go, but anything happening down in that region I want corrected ASAP.

ETA:  My doctor used to tell me that getting your period would very often cure a YI because the blood raises the pH and kills the infection, so that's always an option as well.

  • I know there has been a couple of times when I wasn't sure if that's what it was, and it ran it's course.  The problem is if you don't get it diagnosed by a Dr. the OTC meds can stop being effective because your body gets accustomed to it.  Maybe I'm just paranoid about not wanting my body to get used to meds.

  • I got mild YIs all the time while on NuvaRing and just let them run their course. This'll sound weird, but I'd "scoop" out the CM while in the shower and the itching would stop and within a day the YI would go away. If it's more than mild, I treat it with OTC meds.

Feel free to hate me- I've never had a YI.

I don't hate you, but I am very envious.

accustomed to what? to the meds or to the presence of yeast?  i guess i'm confused as to how my body could get accustomed to meds if i'm not using them.  can you give me the dumbed down version? :)

  • Queen of YI reporting for duty.  I get one like every month or so.  Mostly mild and some really awful ones a few times a year.  I used to let them run their course or try to use the OTC at the first sign.

Since talking to my doctor, since it is a chronic problem, I just get a script for the pill and have like ten refills to use at my leisure thoughout the year.  FWIW I had a YI the cycle I got pregnant.

Haha sorry if that wasn't clear.  My Dr told me to avoid taking the OTC meds at every sign of a YI.  Taking the meds too much makes them less effective when you actually have more than a mild YI. Is that better? I am not articulating well haha.

  • boxie, have you heard any warnings about using an OTC med to treat it while pregnant or while TTC?  i highly doubt it's an issue but i might as well check with the queen herself :)

That makes sense...I only (thank god) have them about 1-2 times per year, and they're generally not mild, so I use the OTC creams and such.  But yes, I wouldn't think that you would want to be using for frequent, mild YIs.

Luckily I haven't had once since the BFP.  But I will be taking the pill if my first new line of defense (natural remedies) do not work.  I have said goodbye to the burning awful messy OTC stuff for now.  My nurse said that I will most likely have more of them with the pregnancy hormones.  I bout nearly fainted!

My doctor said that the creams were okay to use while TTC, but I would ask yours just in case.

  • Def. Not trying to be an AW, but since getting pregnant this time, I have had 7 (count em) YI, along with a UTI, bladder or kidney infection as a main course.....

My Vag is not the place to be lately......I have just been calling the Dr. for a script for the one pill cure!!

He obviously knows I am pregnant, and does not see it as a problem.

I was also given an antifungal cream to use the three days before I got my BFP as I had one then too.

I promise I am not a filthy human, I don't know why this pregnancy is bringing this all out. If one more person asks if I wipe back to front, I. WILL. LOSE. IT!!

I frequently get YI's before AF.  Like Jenny said AF will cure it. But if it is a week before I treat bc I can't stand the itch!

  • I've only had 2 vaginal YI in my life.... the 2nd of which was utterly insane.  I tried the otc stuff and it made it worse.  I went for the Diflucan after 3 days of that... 2ww be damned.  As a matter of fact, AF ended up 5 days late and then lasted twice as long as usual...  We just had sex for the first time since that YI this afternoon....and it hurt like hell.  :(

My point?  I'm sorry and I feel your pain.

  • I haven't had one in a long time, but usually I can't ignore it because of the itching/burning feeling.  I would call my doc for the one-pill Diflucan pill.
