Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

1yr old not weaned from the bottle anyone?

We haven't even really tried weaning Sadie from the bottle. She drinks water from her sippy cups all day long but, to be totally honest, I just never thought about weaning from the bottle until about a week ago. She gets 4 a day (3 day - 1 at night) Then I looked it up online and "they" say she should be bottle weaned by now and we "should be" encouraging her to use open cups already!

So now I'm feeling like a craptastic Mom for forgetting "oh yeah, she shouldn't be drinking from a bottle". Ugh. Please tell me I'm not the only one and the "source" I read on the internet (can't remeber which it was, just the first site that came up in google) was wrong-ola.

  • DS still drinks a bottle in the morning and at bedtime. I'm not really in a hurry to get rid of it.

  • I went through a phase where I was all "OMG we have to get rid of the bottles!" But I got over that. She gets a bottle of milk before she goes to bed, and we bought this cup from Starbucks that makes bird noises when she drinks, so for right now she uses that during the day, but I can tell she'd rather have a bottle. And since she's been sick, if I put something in her cup, she points up to where the bottles are and whines until I put it in a bottle. I'm not too worried about it. She's a pro with a straw, so I'll just wait until she's ready (or until I'm tired of bottles!)

  • Madi still gets one milk bottle a day right before bed. She will only take her milk warmed and in a bottle before bed, otherwise she drinks everything else from a sippy with no troubles. I think its a comfort thing for her.

  • we still do a bottle before bed.  she does sippies with water during the day, a straw cup of milk at my moms during the day...but come night time she wants her bottle.  i have some internal struggles with it, but whatever. :) well drop it when shes ready!
  • My 1 year old still gets 3-4 bottles a day. Were working on it slowly but my ds isn't a good eater so it's more important to me that he drinks his milk and than what container it's in.

This is Sadie 100% which is another reason I am a bit reluctant to switch her. Maybe she won't take it as hard as Im imagining but you ladies are right, before bed it's probably a comfort thing so maybe if we get rid of it all day she can keep the night one if she's having difficulty with it. I'll try not to worry so much and just go with the flow more. Eventually, I'll learn this!

  • Don't feel "craptastic"...Those guides are ridiculous!

I didn't start bottle weaning until after 13 months and DS wasn't completely on sippy cups until 15 months.  He never had an attachment to the bottle, so for me it was a very easy process.

This is my exact situation. It's worse with teething. I've tried sippy straws and several different sippy cups. He just knocks them away and shakes his head.  He also likes his milk warm or room temp.

I'm in this boat too. Tank is 10% for weight and eats less than desired...I'm with you ladies.

  • My almost 18 month old still takes 1 bottle before bed.  During the day he uses a sippy or cup with a straw. Dr wasnt worried at all. Because my DS is not a great eater he also suggested that the bottle have formula in it. Which I do. He gets soy milk or water during the day.  I can tell you though that these last few weeks, his appetite has picked up. I never thought that would happen because the child would only eat maybe 1 semi-meal a day and some snacks throughout.  So the eating will come when they are ready. Just make sure that DC is getting the proper nutrients in the diet.
DS- 4 years old, Natural m/c @ 7 weeks-12/1/09. Infertility issues- low ovarian reserve- low AMH and high FSH. Looking into adoption. Trying to figure out where to go with your little one? My favorite website is: Trekaroo AlternaTickers - Cool, free Web tickers
  • We just got rid of DS's daytime bottle recently.  He gets one when he wakes up and one a little before bedtime -- both have formula as he's had a problem with whole milk and spitting up.

He gets 2% milk (w/ some whole milk mixed in) or water during the day in a sippy cup, but I can tell he's still learning.  The pedi mentioned we should try to get him off of the bottle as soon as we can, but the "in between stage" can last awhile.

Same here. He actually weaned himself from the last bottle at 16 months. He just lost interest in it. I was bummed b/c it was a morning bottle and it gave me 15 minutes to myself :(

  • ugh so many resources telling us what we 'should' do....don't beat yourself up!!

our pedi suggest that ds be off bottle around 15-16 months....I am ok with that but that isn't our 'deadline' per day. I was able to get rid of one bottle no prob...now we are down to 3.5 bottles per day. BUT ds isn't quite a fan of solids at this point so I am not pushing the issues until he gets better at solids and has a wider menu of things he likes....as it is now he is very picky :-P

kids do things on their own terms..yes we are here to guide them and teach them but ulitmately it is still their decision as well, imo :-)

    no worries!

  • Our pedi recommended that DD be weaned from the bottle by 15 months. I thought it was going to be really difficult, but she was weaned by 14 months.
