vaccine research - where to start?

i want to start researching more info on vaccines/vaccine schedules, etc.  i'm not sure which "side of the fence" we are on yet, but would like to be as informed as possible so we can make educated decisions and if we do decide to do an alternate schedule, being able to find a pedi that will support it.  any help as to good resources (on both sides) to start with?  any help appreciated.

Re: vaccine research - where to start?

  • askdrsears.com is a good place to start. He also has a book out about vaccines.

  • we're just going to follow the pedi's advice, might not be the popular advice around here though.

Us too. ?You can't enroll your kids in public schools without up-to-date immunizations (maybe even the Catholic schools too.)?

This is false. You need to say you have a religious objection to vaccinating, and they cannot prevent your kids from attending school.  Unfortunatley, it is pretty much an all-or-nothing thing- you can't pick and choose which vaccinations you use, if your kids get any of them then they have to get all of them.

I have been talking to other moms about their decisions, and I plan on talking to the pediatrician. We will most likely vaccinate on a delayed schedule, but we aren't for sure yet.

  • FWIW, I researched a bunch... and then chose a pedi that a very close, trusted friend suggested.... and I took his opinion on what vaccines to give DD1.

According to the NYC Dept of Ed webpage, in order to enroll a child in public school, you need to bring several pieces of documentation, one of them being proof of immunizations. ?I worked in a pediatrician's office for many years and we often had parents scrambling to get copies of these records to register their children for school. ?Maybe things have changed since then, but I think the webpage would have the?definitive?answer on that one....

  • find a good pediatrician that you trust.

honestly i'm not a doctor and believe that the doctor we chose has done all the research and gives honest feedback on how to handle it. just my opinion. my daughter is 2 and so far she's still alive ;)

  • There is a great article in this month's Mothering magazine about the vaccine debate - Dr. Sear's is interviewed as well as many others. Very long, but worth the read. Possibly avail on their website?

  • I need to jump on this too.  I know their is a huge debate and I completely understand both sides.  Most people only understand ONE side.  I know someone who was a perfectly happy healthy NOT physically/mentally delayed child at all.  When she was 2 and got a series of vaccines she became a vegetable.  She never gained any new skills after that, I don't know how anyone could say it wasn't a direct relation to the shots.

A good friend of mine talked to her pedi about it and they just vaccinated for things that if the baby got would be life threatening.  I'm going to have to do research and then talk to the pedi about my concerns and see what their advice is.  Most likely a delayed schedule.  Our LO will not be in public daycare so i'm not worried about those aspects.

The policy varies fro state to state.

I second the Dr. Sears (one of the sons) book on vaccine.  It is very informative.  It explains the disease the vaccine is designed to prevent, how the vaccine is made, the risks associated with both the disease itself and the vaccine.  It should really help you made an informed decision.

    ?

Good point. ?I probably should've mentioned that here in NYC you cannot enroll in public schools without it. ?Not sure about other states though....?
