Ammonia rash?

What is ammonia rash? How does it differ from diaper rash, or is it a form of it? DD keeps getting redness and we're trying to figure out why. Someone suggested stripping dipes, so we're going to try that, but other info is welcome too!

Re: Ammonia rash?

  • diaper rash is the broad term for any kind of rash in the diaper area.  ammonia rash is specifically caused by ammonia- or diapers that are too wet, or have built up materials on them.  stripping can help, but if it's just a general redness you might want to try putting a piece of fleece in the diapers before you strip.  sometimes baby just needs a little extra moisture protection.  we use fleece at night to keep DS skin dry.

the rash we had due to build up (or something in the product) was blistering and bumpy.  DS would cry when I even mentioned changing his diaper :-(

  • It's more like ammonia burn, at least in our case it was.  There was no rash per say, but just redness on his skin that wouldn't go away.  It then made his skin peel - from the burn.

With it, we had really bad ammonia smelling diapers in the money - it would burn my nose.  I had to cake on the NE salve and get rid of all of our microfiber inserts.

  • Ours was an intense redness on DS's front.  He didn't have any issues on his bum.  It eventually started to peel.

We stripped our microfiber inserts, switched detergents (to Country Save) and haven't had a problem since.
