Poop anxiety -- just a phase?

L is getting more interested in PTing and has lately been freaking out, i.e. -- getting all panic stricken when he has to poop.  He'll ask for me to "change it" like 10 million times before he's actually done anything.  Then he cries and whines until he goes.

He's gone on the potty once, regularly pees on the potty, but I think that one time scared theshit out of him, no pun intended (ok well maybe it was intended...)

Is this something that's normal with PTing?  He seems to be holding it in for days, so I think he must be really anxious about it.  It's not like he's constipated b/c it's not hard or anything when it does come out....

I feel awful for him when he's having a poopy panic. :(

Re: Poop anxiety -- just a phase?

  • I think it is definitely a normal phase that some kids go through.  My bff's pedi told her it was more common w/boys. Make sure you're feeding him all kinds of poop-inducing fruit & lay off on the cheese :)
  • Very common.  DD has been pee trained for months and has yet to poop on the potty.  She's completely freaked out by the idea.  I suppose a miracle will occur someday ...

  • I hope its a phase.  Otherwise I will never be finished cleaning out Elmo underwears!
